Note: This section applies to the latest version v3.0.2, unless otherwise indicated.

GENERAL

Do you have a Quick Start guide to all the features?

Tap the question mark ( ? ) button just above the App Settings button at the bottom of the middle bar. Here’s the printable PDF.

How do I back up version 2 data *before* upgrading to v3?

Please use File Sharing (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4094) and save the NotesPlusPlus.sqlite file (your notes) and the Audio folder (your recordings) from Notes Plus Documents to your computer.

How do I add old notebooks from version 2 to my version 3 library?

Just drop the NotesPlusPlus.sqlite file into Notes Plus Documents via File Sharing. Then exit the app from the background. Relaunch the app and you’ll see your v2 data being converted to v3 data. Please allow time for this process to finish.

How do I enter closeup mode in version 3?

Just switch to the Pen tool on the toolbar and long-press anywhere on the page. We’ll bring back the button to activate closeup mode just like in version 2.

How do I redo an action?

Long-press on Undo to reveal the Redo button.

What styluses are recommended for use with Notes Plus?

Please look here for an answer.

Does Notes Plus support these styluses: Adonit Jot Pro, ByZero Studio One Pen, iPen?

You can already use the Adonit Jot Pro with Notes Plus to some extent. Our integration with the pen in the future will make it more precise. As for the other two pens, we plan to support them in a future update (we’ve already had their SDKs).

How do I purchase and use handwriting recognition?

Our handwriting recognition engine is licensed from Vision Objects, the maker of MyScript Memo. This means you can install the app for free from the App Store to try out the accuracy of the engine before deciding on a purchase. Note that even if you already own the full version of MyScript Memo, you will still need to purchase this module in Notes Plus if you want to use the feature.

Here are the steps:

1) Exit Notes Plus from the background: from iPad Home screen, double-press the Home button to reveal the background dock, long-press Notes Plus icon until it wiggles, then tap the red minus (-).
2) Log out of your Apple account: go to iPad Settings > Store, tap on the Apple ID button and “Sign Out”.
3) Connect your iPad to WiFi or 3G
4) Open Notes Plus
5) Select the Pen tool and write some text
6) Circle the text, tap on the “>” button and then “Convert to Text”
7) Tap on “Purchase” to confirm your purchase and follow the process, which includes entering your username/password that you used to purchase Notes Plus. Wait a while for the transaction to complete.

What HWR languages does Notes Plus support?

We support the same set of languages that MyScript Memo supports, namely (in bold = currently supported): Arabic, Catalan, Chinese (Simp. & Trad.), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English (Can/ UK/ US), Finnish, French (Ca/ Fr), German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Kazakh, Korean, Norwegian, Polish , Portuguese (Br/ Port), Romanian, Russian, Spanish (Mex/ Esp), Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese.

How do I edit the text converted from my handwriting?

Two-finger-tap on the textbox or switch to ABC mode on the toolbar and tap the textbox. To change the text style, use the Hand tool and tap the textbox, then change its style in the Palette.

How do I search my notes?

As of v3.0.2, you can search for notebook/folder names and typed text (including converted text, even if it’s not visible). To do so, tap Tools (top left on the toolbar) > Browse Library. Swipe down from the top of the list of notebooks/pages to reveal the Search box.

You can’t search for page titles (it’s a bug!).

How do I jump to a notebook page?

Tap the page navigation field that looks like “<  (1/2) >” (meaning you’re editing 1 of 2 pages), then enter a page number to jump to.

How do I import a PDF?

There are three ways:

1. Use File Sharing and add your PDFs into Notes Plus Documents. Close and re-open Notes Plus and they will appear in the root folder. Tap on a PDF and start annotating it.
2. Long-press a PDF attachment in an email message and choose “Open In Notes Plus”
3. Load a PDF in another app (Safari / iBooks / etc.), then “Open In Notes Plus”

Is it possible to view a PDF/notebook in the browser panel and take notes in the other?

Yes, it is. Just go to the browser panel and open the PDF/notebook there. Then go to the note-taking panel and open a notebook you want to take notes in. Note that the browser panel is for viewing only.

Can I apply various styles to various words in a textbox?

Unfortunately, you can’t. Notes Plus doesn’t support inline formatting so you’ll need to use several textboxes and give each of them different formatting.

Can I print my notes?

AirPrint will be supported in a future update. For now, please export your notes as PDFs (Tools > Export > Email > [choose a PDF option]) and print them from within another app. Sorry about the inconvenience.

I only type my notes. Is there a way to export them as text in the body of an email instead of a PDF/image?

No, there isn’t. But there will be an “Export as Text” option. Meanwhile, you can use iOS standard copy/paste command as follows: use the ABC tool and tap on the text (or use the T tool if you typed full page), tap again > Select All > Copy. Then go to another text field (e.g. your email), tap there and then Paste.

Can I use custom paper backgrounds? If so, where can I get some?

Currently custom backgrounds are not supported until a future update. That said, there’s a workaround: (1) Create a new notebook and import a PDF template as its first page; (2) Make as many copies of the page as needed for your notebook; (3) Annotate on these pages.

By courtesy of policarpo, you can find a few PDF templates here.

How does Dropbox work in version 3?

The new Dropbox sync in Notes Plus is an attempt to simulate the desktop version: your online Dropbox folder will mirror the folder structure in Notes Plus. What this means is:

- If you add/delete an item (i.e. a notebook / folder / PDF) in Notes Plus, the same item previously synced under NotesPlus/Sync on Dropbox will be added/deleted.
- If you add a PDF under NotesPlus/Sync, the file will be downloaded to Notes Plus library.
- If you delete an item under NotesPlus/Sync, the same item will NOT be deleted from Notes Plus. Instead, Notes Plus will reupload the newly deleted item to Dropbox. If you delete and reinstall Notes Plus, you can have old data from Dropbox automatically downloaded to Notes Plus.

To start using it, turn on “Auto-sync with Dropbox” and tap “Link” in App Settings.

What if I just want to upload my notebook as a readable PDF onto Dropbox?

We’ll bring back “Export as PDF to Dropbox” in a future update. Until then, you can email a PDF to your Dropbox account using the free sendtodropbox.com service. Sorry about the inconvenience.

How do I back up and restore data without using Dropbox?

Save the Notebooks and Recordings folders from Notes Plus Documents to your computer via File Sharing.

To restore data from the Notebooks folder: (1) Compress its contents in a .zip file (any name); (2) Drop the file into Notes Plus Documents; (3) Exit the app from the background and relaunch it; (4) Wait while the app unzips the backup and load it before you can see your old notes. The .zip file will be deleted from Notes Plus Documents when this process is done.

How do I play the recordings (in .caf format) on my computer?

Please use QuickTime to play these files. In the future, we’ll try to use another format (like mp3) for easier playback.

How do I best use the browser panel besides browsing the web?

Some ideas:

1. Open a notebook/PDF for viewing while taking notes in the note-taking panel. See an entry above.
2. Use an online calculator. Try opening this site in the browser panel: http://new.instacalc.com.
3. Check email, Google Calendar, etc.

If you discover any other good uses, please let us know. Thanks in advance.

How do I share a notebook with other Notes Plus users?

Tap Tools > Export > Email > WebArchive – Entire notebook, then enter their email addresses. They will then long-press on the .webarchive attachment in the received email and choose “Open In Notes Plus” and then tap “Import” in the browser panel (the blue arrow) to import it into their library as a regular notebook.

Tip: you might want to share your notebook with the support team along with your issues for quicker support.

TROUBLESHOOTING

The app crashes frequently. What should I do?

Dropbox might be the cause. If you’re using it, unlink from it in App Settings (tap the gear icon on the bottom left-hand corner, then tap “Unlink” under “Auto-sync with Dropbox”).

How come I can’t even launch the app? It flashes for a few seconds and then quits.

Please reset the app to its manufacturer settings by deleting the NAppProperties.plist file from Notes Plus Documents via File Sharing. You won’t lose your notes by doing this.

My v2 notebooks have been converted to v3 data but all of them have today’s date as their creation dates. What’s wrong?

This bug was fixed in v3.0.2. If you still keep your NotesPlusPlus.sqlite file from version 2, just update to v3.0.2 from the App Store, then drop this file back into Notes Plus Documents via File Sharing and you’ll have correct creation dates on your old notes. We’re terribly sorry about this.

How come some of my typed pages are blank?

Your blank pages might have previously contained a ‘<’ or ‘&’ character, which wiped out the whole text it was in on a page refresh. This serious bug was fixed in v3.0.2. Please get the update from the App Store. Terribly sorry about this.

Why does the screen jiggle when I’m trying to write with my stylus?

Your palm is probably being misunderstood as a four-finger swipe, thus activating iOS Multitasking Gestures. Apple doesn’t allow changing this setting by code, so you’ll need to turn it off in iPad Settings > General > Multitasking Gestures when using Notes Plus.

Why am I being asked to purchase the HWR module again when I have already done so?

Just go through the process again to complete it; you won’t be charged again (but make sure to use the same account previously used to purchase the module). This is an App Store process that applies to every app that has been uninstalled and reinstalled.

Why can’t I see the “Open In Notes Plus” option for a PDF although I tried scrolling the list?

It might be an iOS limitation. If other apps already registered “Open In” with iOS before Notes Plus then there might be no more room for Notes Plus (and that’s usually the case, considering the popular PDF format). See if this article helps.

Why can’t I erase the handwriting after choosing “Show handwriting”?

It’s a bug. Sorry about this.

The “Ink Effect” option is grayed out in Pen Settings from the Palette. Is this normal?

We disabled this option on iPad 1 as this feature consumes memory. We hope to bring it back soon in a future update.

I’m left-handed but I don’t use the Palm Pad from the top. What do I do?

This version supports the left-handed “hooked” style only. We’ll support other styles soon. Sorry about the inconvenience.

I selected my handwriting and tapped “Convert to Text” but I got an empty textbox. Why?

First, check that you’re using the correct recognition language for your text. For example, the HWR engine can’t recognize French text if its current recognition language is English. Second, try resizing the textbox to make it bigger.

I imported a PDF into Notes Plus, now I see several blank pages in the PDF notebook, not to mention garbled text on some pages and pages with page number 0.

This usually happens when you navigate through the PDF pages that haven’t been fully loaded yet. After importing a PDF, you’ll see a spinning-wheel icon on the new PDF notebook in the library. It indicates the PDF is being imported. Please wait until this icon disappears before viewing the PDF notebook and you shouldn’t have blank pages or other weird things.

OTHER

How do I know what Notes Plus version I’m using?

Look in the About tab in App Settings (accessed via the gear button on the bottom left-hand corner).

How do I take a screenshot of my iPad screen and send it to Support?

Press the Lock and Home buttons on your iPad simultaneously, then check in the Photos app and email it to us along with your question. Alternatively, you can upload it to a free image hosting service like PostImage.org and include the image link in your comment.

How do I report a bug?

You might want to look at the bug list first to see if it’s already known. If not, email support@notesplusapp.com, or comment on this site where comments are allowed. Please let us know the following information:

1. Your iPad generation: iPad 1 or iPad 2
2. iOS version: look in iPad Settings > General > About
3. Notes Plus version
4. Steps to reproduce the bug
5. Screenshots if they help explain the bug

Feel free to give us suggestions to make the app better too.

My notes plus doesn’t seem to like PDFs. In the notebook folder it’s still supposedly importing even though it’s all there (it’s being doing this all day). It makes it difficult to delete it or move it because I can’t select it because it’s supposedly loading. Also it meant that I crashed a notebook (if that makes sense), spent ages trying to delete it and finally succeeded but I’d prefer if I didn’t have to. How long should it take to load a PDF? Also it doesn’t appear to be syncing with Dropbox. I’ve turned the sync off in the meantime because I’m guessing they might be related problems.
    What’s your advice? Thanks.

      Hi Erin,

Can you exit the app from the background: from the Home screen, double-press the Home button to reveal the background dock, long-press Notes Plus icon until it wiggles, then tap the red minus (-)? Relaunch Notes Plus and see if it’s still importing. I guess the indicator icon just gets stuck somehow (a bug). How long it takes to load a PDF depends on the size of the PDF. If it’s taking too long for a few pages, it’s a bug. The Dropbox feature is admittedly not robust yet, kicking in at the wrong times. We’re rewriting the Dropbox logic now. Sorry about the inconvenience.

      Hi William,

First make sure you’re opening a PDF, not a DOC or other formats. If you are and still can’t see Notes Plus in the Open In list, try restarting your iPad. From within what app are you trying open a PDF in Notes Plus? Can you try again in another app?

    Hello,
Like your app, but please please change the format of the audio files from .CAF to something that is actually useful and easily transferable. i use the audio recording feature, but it’s not exactly handy when i send my colleagues a .CAF file – why not just use something that is popular like .Mp3?

Also, ( and I know you are aware ) performance / responsiveness of the app has gone down noticeably from the upgrade from 2.0 to 3.0 – it seems more ‘bloated’ now and it’s impacting how responsive/smooth the app is ( and this is on iPad 2 ).

Other than that, the only major feature I would like to see is a more elegant way to add custom page templates.

      Hi Seb

We’re aware of the limitation of the .caf audio format and we’ll try our best to use .mp3 instead. We’ll also improve the general performance in v3.0.3. Meanwhile, avoid putting too much text on one page (create a new page and continue with your work). Recording while writing is also known to slow things down, so avoid it too if possible. Sorry about the lagginess. It’ll get better.

As a college student, I have found this app very useful. However, when I refer back to notes while simultaneously listening to recording, the recording abruptly stops every time I turn the page. This becomes a hassle when I am not seeing where I left off in the recording so I waste time estimating where i left off. I would love if there was a way to allow the recording to continuously play so that I can flip through, add in, and delete my notes simultaneously. Let me know if there is a way to do this! Thanks!

I can’t seem to get copy-paste to work outside the app. Things i copy in another app such as text or images do not seem to paste into a book. It works just fine with the in-built browser, but not from external apps. What am I missing?

Are you having difficulty pasting copied text from another app into Notes Plus? If so, switch to ABC mode, then tap anywhere on the page to place a textbox (or simply switch to T mode), tap again to reveal the Paste option. Tap it to paste.

Thanks! This works nicely for text. I would never have found that! But… A) if there is too much text, it disappears off the page bottom; and b) I simply can’t find how to paste a copied image file from safari (works fine from your inbuilt browser, but that’s so much more effort. When I find a small image for the text i want to clip it straight away. The only alternative is laborious -copy the URL an re- open in the app browser, find the image again and flick it over. All too much trouble). Thanks for th fast feedback – it makes me feel special

          a) We know this problem. We’ll try to handle spillover text better in a future update. Sorry you’ll have to paste smaller chunks of text so it won’t be hidden.
          b) v3.0.3 will allow pasting from the iOS clipboard, meaning you’ll find the image you copied in Safari in Notes Plus clipboard.

      Hi Carrie,

Currently, there isn’t a single button that does that, so you’ll need to use iOS standard copy/paste command as follows: use the ABC tool and tap on the text (or use the T tool if you typed full page), double-tap a word, resize your selection using the two handles that appear, then tap Copy. Then go to another text field (e.g. your email), tap there and then Paste.

    Hi,

Love the V3 update – I review my iPad notetaking apps periodically and you’ve successfully lured me back from UPAD…

    Just three suggestions:

    1) Evernote sync would be wonderful
    2) Custom papers/notebooks or some in-app purchases for more styles would be great
    3) The development progress section was helpful as I could see what was in the pipeline – this seems to have gone out of whack with V3 – any chance that this is coming back?

Any of this in the pipeline for the near future?

    Keep up the good work

      Hi Aki,

      Welcome back!

      1. This is on our wish list.
      2. We haven’t thought of selling custom papers in the near future. We’ll just let people import their own paper. Until then, (1) Create a new notebook and import a PDF template as its first page; (2) Make as many copies of the page as needed for your notebook; (3) Annotate on these pages. More styles can be found here.
      3. I think it’ll come back. The site just needs a major cleanup. Thanks.

      Hi Toan,

Thanks for the quick reply – very impressive!

Apart from the things I mentioned my earlier post (Evernote, Custom Template, Development report) I think this app is pretty much perfect. Changing CAF to MP3 would be very helpful but I get the impression that you are already well aware of this and that it will be resolved soonish.

A more unrealistic wish would be to be able to import iBooks into the left browser of Notes+ and annotate them there/make notes on threright pane rather than in iBooks itself – I don’t like my notes being spread all over the place. But I think that this is for Apple to sort out, not developers like yourself.

Speculating on the (very) long term future it would be great to have some sort of desktop version of Notes+ – in the short term i’ll use Evernote to edit Notes+ (when it becomes possible to sync it) but what i’m really hoping for is that, with increasing integration between OSX and iOS, at one point in the future it might be possible to run iOS apps on my desktop in some sort of emulator mode, or ideally in a way that is really baked into the OS. It would certainly increase your potential client base – and it looks like the upcoming Mountain Lion is a small step in that direction.

Anyway, keep up the good work – may you succeed in turning Notes+ into an iOS version of Microsoft Courier!

      Regards,

      Aki

        Hi Aki,

I’m not sure about the ability to import PDFs from iBooks into Notes Plus because I can’t seem to find an “Open In…” option in iBooks. Come to think of it, it’s not really strange considering you have to sync your books to iPad for them to appear. We’ll see if we can do anything on our part about importing books from this Apple app.

          Hi Toan,

I just wanted to remind you that iBooks originally supports the ePub format. I think Aki meant the possible import of those kind of books into Notes Plus maybe? PDF import is the 2nd option of iBooks, but not the default one.

            Hi Laure,

I think Aki meant the ability to import books directly from iBooks (in either ePub or PDF format) into Notes Plus so he only needs to maintain one collection, but the problem is there’s no “Open in” option in iBooks, nor can you find these books in iBooks Documents via File Sharing.

Ok then, we’re having the same understanding. :)
I thought that because you only mentioned PDFs you didn’t think about ePubs, that’s all!
But it’s true that there’s no such thing as an “Open in” feature in iBooks… which would be an interesting possibility.

When you create a new pen setting from the Palette, it will be saved in the radial wheel, which appears if you long-press on one of the pen slots. So to set a default pen, just release your finger on a desired pen. You can assign up to 6 default pens.

I disabled and tried all the options, unistalled and reinstalled, anyway the new version lacks usability, pencils changing, windows sliding and background, just to say. did you try to write the same things with the different versions before upgrading?
Sorry if I seem rough, but I’m a first minute user and I sincerly ask you to send me a link for downgrade, cuse I love this app but For now I can’t use it.
    Thanks, Francesco Zito

      Hi Francesco,

We’re sorry about the annoyance of the closeup box popping up undesirably. We’ll have a separate button to activate it. Sorry there’s no way to downgrade.

      Hi Clive,

Yes, recordings are auto-synced to your Dropbox folder too. To avoid this, unlink from Dropbox in App Settings (remember to tap Unlink).

I have upgraded to 3.0.2 and text recognition is not working! Once you press “convert to text” does not appear any text in the textbox. Nevertheless the handwriting s still available when you switch.
    Please help,
    Pablo

      Hi Pablo,

First, check that you’re using the correct recognition language for your text. For example, the HWR engine can’t recognize French text if its current recognition language is English. Second, try resizing the textbox to make it bigger.

        Resizing: doesn´t work.
Recognition language: do not know how to change it. And before the upgrade were working.

On the other hand: in previous versions when exporting/converting the name of the page was included in the pdf. Now it is not happening. It is a bug (bad) or it is planned in that way (worse)?

        Thanks!

          Hi Pablo,

To change the recognition languages, tap the icon next to “Convert to Text” (something like “EN”, for English), then choose a language or download a new one. Regarding the second issue, it’s neither a bug nor feature. We’ll bring back that header on exported PDFs as soon as we can.

I have a few questions on some features of Notes Plus. I was wondering if you already have the features or if they are planned.

    1) Bullet Points- I don’t see any option of creating an outline with bullet points with multiple levels. This is CRUCIAL!
    2) Insert Tables- I don’t see any option for inserting tables or columns. This would make things A LOT easier
    3) I want to take notes using the Cornell System that has 2 columns and then a summary section underneath it. Is there anyway to have a page format to allow this? (The program Notebook from Circus Ponies currently has this feature if you want to look at it)

These 3 things would make the biggest difference. I hope you have these features or if not, I hope you put them in soon. Thanks for you support!

      Hi Michael,

      1. We’ll implement bulleting in the future. Meanwhile, you can long-press on “-” on the keyboard and get a bullet.
      2. We’ll consider this.
      3. Currently custom backgrounds are not supported until a future update. That said, there’s a workaround: (1) Create a new notebook and import the Cornell Template PDF as its first page; (2) Make as many copies of the page as needed for your notebook; (3) Annotate on these pages.

Could you help me identify where can find how to turn on the feature that auto dates and geographically locates where the note was taken?

    Kind regards,
    Steve

      Steve,

I’m not aware of features in Notes Plus that provides Auto Dating and/or Geo-tagging. Those are the kind of features Apple users have available for Photos, not note taking Apps.

If I’m wrong, I hope that NP Support (Toan, Duy) will correct my mistakes.

Philip ( Tho Auto Dating sounds kinda fun. Automatic Dates for … geeks? ;-) )

      Hi Steve,

Philip is right. We have yet to support those features. It’s a great idea though. Thanks.
