That did it. Your app is awsome btw. Greatly appreciate the quick revert and your openness to the feedbacks given.

    Hi Viet.
In your recent release, I found it difficult to create a succeeding page. After several attempts of creating both in the handwriting mode or keyboard mode, when I’d open the app, only a square inch of the page would show and I’d be brought back to the home page.
    thanks

      Hi Jew,

Do you drag the page up pass its bottom to create new page? Do you find two finger dragging is difficult to perform? I’ll probably have a pin mode for people to scroll the page freely.

      Thanks,
      Viet

    Hi Viet,

Seems like there is a couple of bugs i found

when zooming full screen in landscape and then changing to portrait zooming. The lower portion is not protected and the palm will leave writing marks.

When drawing or selecting too close to the borders, cannot see the delete button as it will be hidden outside the border.

      Oct 06, 2010 @ 10:49:36

      Hi Gary,

Thank you very much for pointing the bugs out. I already put it in the list for release 2.1.

    Hi Viet,

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

    - Redo: that is entirely not discoverable! :) It would be great to just have the undo and redo buttons visible at all times next to each other, I think they are used enough to justify it.
    - Undo: I have uploaded a video to YouTube that shows the bug I am having with undo. It is pretty major in my opinion. Essentially if you select and delete two elements, then undo the deletion, subsequent undos will NOT delete the creation of those two elements. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rt9GI1eN2Ms
    - Everything else: Thank you! I’ll still be using Notes Plus as my app of choice, despite the shortcomings it is the best on the app store.

    Hi Viet,

First off, the app is fantastic. Easily the best note taking app out there, and I’ve tried a few. I have some bugs and suggestions though.

    * The app needs a redo function.
    * The undo function is flaky when it is undoing deletes and selection actions.
    * It’d be nice for the shape detection to pop up a menu to allow you to pick to convert to a shape or not, instead of assuming you do want one.
    * The button to cancel a selection is too long (“Didn’t mean to select”)
    * The gesture to go to the next/previous page is far too long, and I prefer side to side swipes instead of up/down.
    * I wish you could change the font options for already existing text.
    * The handwriting zoom window is very awesome, but always appears in the center of the page, which is useless. There is a huge unused space at the bottom of the screen.

Great worm though, I am recommending this app to lots of friends.

      Oct 05, 2010 @ 10:28:35

      Hi Max,

Thank you very much for your feedbacks.

      - Redo: if you long press on “Undo”, it will reveal the undo/redo action sheet.
      - I’ll change the button to make it look better.
      - It seems like side to side swipes are more natural than up/down. I’ll think about that.
      - Text info change, yes, I’ll put it in product backlog.
      - Did you try to move the writing area by touching and dragging the small rectangle?

      Thanks,
      Viet

About the zoom view. I see what you are saying now. Move it down to the bottom or have it resizeable/movable. Will do.

    Hi Viet,

This mail may be the first from Japanese users.

I would love to copy handwritings as well as text.

      Sep 26, 2010 @ 10:36:23

      Hi Kimura,

Thanks for the comments; Japan is actually my second biggest buying country, just after the US.

Yes, many people have asked about cut, copy, paste. I want to do it more, for example, like the Courier concept with sharing ability. I’ll for sure implement cut and paste, only in a way that nobody has done it before. Look for it in future versions.

      Thanks,
      Viet

Like the app but am sick of waiting for 2.0. It was supposed to be out in August and we’re already in mid September. When do you think it will be out? I hope development hasn’t stopped… That would be a horrible waste of $4.99 :(

    • Viet Tran
      Sep 17, 2010 @ 15:41:01

      Hi John,

Sorry for the delay because there are too much changes in the app that it needs preparation for the release (beta testing, quick start video, press, …). I do have a beta that I sent to a few people to test. If you want it, I can give it to you before release.

      Thanks,
      Viet

    Hi Viet,

Thanks for the great piece of software. I’m really looking forward to seeing the improvements in V. 2.0!

I have some feature requests. Some have already been mentioned, but I’ll state them again to highlight their importance (at least to me). Some are on your list for 2.0 and some I have no idea if they’re even possible, but maybe you haven’t thought of them yet:

    1. I would like to the default page style to remain when I change. I prefer the yellow legal style page, but have to select it every time I create a new note.

    2. I too, would like the option to increase line width on the page.

    3. A better way to manage and organize notes. Folders will work, I guess, but you may have a more elegant solution?

    4. Ability to move pages from one note to another note

    5. Ability to paste images (and re-size too if possible)

    6. Ability to create hyperlinks to webpages or even to other content within Notes Plus.

    7. Voice notes (can’t wait for this in V2.0!)

    8. Dropbox integration (please, please, please)

    9. Handwriting recognition

    10. New name – only because there is another app called Notes+, which makes things a bit confusing, but I can live with Notes Plus. Not sure I like Handwriter, because that’s a bit of a misnomer.

How about Total Note, Note All, Premier Note, Top Note, etc.? Don’t know if you like any of these, but maybe they will spark some creativity.

Good luck. I wish you the best success, and keep up the amazing work.

      Hi Rob,

Thank you very much for a long list of feedbacks and suggestions. I’m happy to know somebody really cares. You won’t be disappointed.

      1. Ok. I haven’t thought of this before. Thank you.
      2. Definitely. This is easy to do and I’m pretty sure that it will be in version 2.0.
      3. I can only think of folders right now and I’ll be pushing it for version 2.0. If you have any better idea, let me know.
      4. This requires a little bit of work. I’ll try.
      5. Yes, I get this request a lot. Trying to get it in version 2.0.
      6. This is a major task and it needs further analysis. Will let you know.
      7. Yes, this has to definitely in version 2.0.
      8. I know this is important but I’m kind of behind on my development. I don’t know if I could squeeze this in version 2.0.
      9. I cannot do this myself. I have to integrate it in from bigger institute like Apple, Google, Microsoft. Right now, there is not a package available. If you find any, let me know.
      10. Notes Plus it is. Changing the name requires changing icons, web sites, brands, … and I’m not sure I have time for it right now. Have to make a good software. Will touch on the marketing and branding later.

Again, thank you very much for your caring.

    Aug 23, 2010 @ 18:27:19

VT – an additional thought as I read more of what you’ve planned for 2.0 or promised for future versions.

Simply put, you’ve promised quite a lot, and I’m concerned that with all the new features, the UI and app might get rather bloated and fail to do anything particularly well. Just take some lessons from apps that are already out there:

Noterize – great UI, very intuitive and keeps things simple while still being powerful. (But they lack a nice zoom window like you have, which is a killer feature for me).

Notify – too powerful for its own good – the interface is ugly and far from intuitive. Requires way too much thought to get anything done.

iAnnotate PDF – very powerful, but sacrifices a good simple UI for the sake of customizability.

I think Notes Plus in its current version has a nicely intuitive and simple interface. Please just keep it that way with the new version.

      Aug 23, 2010 @ 20:46:30

      Hi Ciaran,

Thank you very much for your feedbacks. And also thank you for caring about the UI, which my app focuses heavily on. The new UI will be even simpler than the current UI, without the next/previous/add buttons (replaced by swipe gestures). There won’t be a switch between drawing/typing/selecting mode (replaced by double taps and two finger scroll). There won’t be a button to display the zoom-write (replaced by long press gesture). In summary, there won’t be very many buttons in version 2.0 – that makes the UI less crowded.

I’ll thinking about cut and paste as you suggested.

      Again, thank you.

This app has great promise. I’ve tried most of it’s competitors (and to date have favored Ghostwriter Notes), but this one seems to do things quite well. I see there are a number of UI changes in the works, so I won’t comment on those just yet (aside from encouraging you to keep it simple, and make sure the tool icons are beautiful in their simplicity), but instead will add the following requests: (1) allow me to move a page from one note to another. If I have to jot something down and accidentally put it in the wrong notebook, I’m currently stuck with manually copying what I wrote. (2). Dropbox would be my preferred external file system/support.

Keep up the great work on what looks to be a very promising app.

    Aug 15, 2010 @ 03:17:17

The new sound great! I’m not sure if HandWrite+ would suit the app in every regard as there is room for typing and note-taking. That being said, Notes+ indeed sounds to be the best name as of now. On the other hand, Portfolio+ will also suit the description of the application well.
    Suggestions:
Voice recording (as mentioned) can be exported along with the document, mp3 would be best suited as it’s very common.
DropBox and SugarSync compatibility (Evernote already mentioned in your description).
Not sure if there is a library search feature in the current app, if not it will be a great add on. Few of the apps don’t support it and it’s hard to find certain text or notes before an important meeting.

      Hi Jake,

Sorry for this late response. I’m working on the voice recording now and will release as soon as possible. I’ll be working on DropBox later. Thank you very much for your feedbacks.

      Best regards,

    Aug 12, 2010 @ 05:01:40

Can you please consider giving users the ability to organize the notes? I would love to have the ability to create a main subject/category as well as subcategories. Visually this could be implemented by allowing a user to create a styled notebook for each category and then subcategory created would add a tab to the notebook.

I am not sure if the following is outside the scope of this app, but I am going to throw it out there anyways: can you allow the ability to import PDF files that could be marked up in the same way a regular notes plus page could?

    • Viet Tran
      Aug 12, 2010 @ 15:51:42

      Hi Christina,

Sure! I’m introducing folders in version 2.0. I’m sure it’d be much easier to organize notes. I’m also working on the importing PDF for writing over. I’m have to be very careful with importing PDF files because it affects performance a lot. Thank you very much for your feedbacks.

Remove (or give option for user to remove) Notes Plus footer from PDF. Have ink write like iDraft/Penultimate.

    • Viet Tran
      Aug 14, 2010 @ 12:38:25

      Hi Mark,

The footer will be remove for sure. Also, I really love to have the “ink look” effect. The way to do it is to use bitmap texture. My app is currently using vector drawing. I could combine the two with some tricks; however, I need to work out the performance. There is a reason why those apps with ink effect don’t have much features – it is because of the performance. I will let you know when I got this figured out.

      Thanks,
      Viet

    Aug 08, 2010 @ 05:33:58

This app is almost perfect! Thank you so much for creating an app that looks so nice and is so functional. I beg you, please add the voice recording feature, and if it could sync in time to what I write to some extent, that would be perfect (main use is lecture notes). I’d probably pay another $3-5 on an in-app purchase for that capability. However, speed is still paramount!

    Thanks again!

    • Viet Tran
      Aug 08, 2010 @ 14:07:38

      Hi GH,

The voice recording feature will for sure be added to version 2.0 (free upgrade). I’m wrapping it up to submit to the app store. Thanks.

Thanks for this app. I have bought about 6-7 in this category and tried a bunch of free ones.

I keep using only 2 out of about 15 I have tried overall, and Notes Plus is one of the final two.

My decision for the winner will be based on your 2.0 version. Are you still planning on submitting in July with the features you outlined? Thanks again!

    Jul 16, 2010 @ 21:17:39

Hi This really is a wonderful app, I use it in preference to the dozen other note taking apps I have purchased. Is there a possibility of audio, and audio that links with notes? Also, an autoscroll with a hotspot at the end so that there is no pause before scrolling. Finnally are you going to make a notebook feature to organize notes?
    Sincerily Mariann

    • Viet Tran
      Jul 17, 2010 @ 14:21:50

      Hi Mariann,

Thank you for using Notes+ instead of its many competitors. Yes, there are many requests about including audio recording and I’m trying to make it in the next version. I had the pausing so that you can finish stroke like letter ‘t’, or ‘i’. If this is not a desirable feature, I will probably add a preference setting to turn it off. I don’t quite understand what you mean by “notebook feature”. Do you mean folders?

I can reproduce the problem with the zoom box not responding to writing. I open up the Quick Start note where it explains about the zoom function. I then hit ‘+’ to open up a new page. I then press the zoom box icon. It will not respond to any type of input. For a while I thought it was me not understanding the instructions on how to use it, but the I started a new note and the zoom box worked as expected.

I do have question/problem when using on zoom box. I open up the zoom box and write a note. I then erase the note and then open up the zoom box to write a new note. Part of my old note still remains showing in the zoom box, but not in the actual note box itself. Is this a bu

I do not know if is a bug, but i did pich and the sheet zoomed, then was impossible to go back to full screen.
I think that can be very good pinch in and out, slide with two fingers the zoomed image.
Draw on zoomed page and go back to full screen with a two finger tap.
Also i can draw using two fingers at time…

Btw, what about “Magic Notes”? It’s still just as descriptive (this app lets me take “notes”) but with the implied addition of being able to do things that handwritten notes on physical paper can’t do, like upload to Dropbox, change pen color, undo, etc. It’s also in accord with Apple’s marketing of the iPad as a “magical” device that can do many everyday activities but in a fun and augmented way. (Plus there’s the Magic Mouse and the possibly soon-to-be Magic Trackpad). It let’s the buyer know that this app is clean and thoughtful like an Apple product.

  28. BC
    Jul 01, 2010 @ 05:15:31

My vote is to rename the app. The current name is way too generic sounding for an app that is genuinely different from the rest of the note taking apps out there. And I agree with removing the “+” from the name–it just sounds kinda spammy to me and it’s not good for search results.

Another feature request: the ability to continue taking notes down the page without running out of room at the bottom. The current behavior should definitely be the default because I think it fits most users needs, but some of us have always wanted to have “digital” paper without the limitations of physical space.

Also, have you ever heard of the Cornell note taking system? If you offered another paper template with the Cornell-style lines on the left side and bottom of the page, a LOT of study geeks would go nuts over this app and would be a clever feature to promote in a future version (for a relatively easy-to-add paper template).

Hi, I’m having major problems with a bug that moves what you draw on the page when you close/reopen the program. Furthermore, some drawn images won’t erase or wont save as erased. I basically had my notes ruined because of this bug, please fix to make this program more reliable.
    Thanks,
    Hatley

    Hi Viet
Thank you for you practicable app. I am widely using it. I have to write many notes which have a lot of mathematical symbols and graphs. Non of type based apps work well for some one like me. Now I almost lost my pens and notebooks, and my room eventually got clean! I saw other suggestion in this blog and I am sure you will improve the app in order to be much more capable. I would like to add one suggestion about zooming.
That would be wonderful if you work a little more on zooming functionality. for example if you bring it out from type mode and make it more reachable. Also I think if you add one more zoom future which just zoom the page twice and give you four rectangles an the top which one could easily switch to different quarters of the page probably helps to use the page as efficient as an actual notebook. Adding a ribbon like window on top of page in this mode might help to keep track the current line of writing.
    Thank you again
    Regards,
    Geev

Might want to consider removing the “+” symbol from the name, as it makes internet searches for your app (I was looking for video of functionality from a 3rd party reviewer before I bought it) difficult.

      Hi Adam,

Thanks very much for the tip. I would love to remove the +; it’s just that all the good names (without the +) are taken.

I have spent over $60 on note taking apps to try to find one that satisfies all my needs. Yours comes the closest!!! What a great job. The few things that I think would make this perfect (some already mentioned but I want to add to the vote):

    1. An option to customize the color of the pen/text tools (RGB sliders for example)
    2. Definitely needs some type of grouping/folder system for the notes as well as a search feature.
    3. Please don’t rename the app.
    4. Dropbox and Evernote integration would be awesome.
    5. Being able to increase the size of the zoom field will be great.

    Thanks for a wonderful app!!!!

    Hi,
This is a really wonderful application. After using so many different note applications, I became a bit skeptical about whether I would find the mixture of being able to handwrite and type notes effectively but I think you’ve done a great job combining these two.

    A few feature requests:
    1) Currently, the application auto-saves any changes you make to an existing document. However, sometimes you have a document, make changes, and then decide you want to revert back to the original. It would be great if there was an option to save or not save the changes once you’re done with an editing session instead of always just saving.

    2) When I’m zoomed in and writing notes, if I write a character incorrectly, I use the undo function. However, this automatically removes the zoom window. It would be nice if the zoom window was maintained even when I click undo.

    3) While an erase function exists, I find it difficult to select exactly the text or drawings that I want to erase. I don’t entirely dislike the way selection is handled but if there was a way to make it more sensitive that would be great. For example if I wanted to erase just a few characters of a word I hand wrote it would be very difficult to do currently.

    4) I know people have mentioned this, but DropBox and EverNote integration would be fantastic. I use to former myself but I know a lot of people use the latter.

Thanks and keep up the great work!

    Kind regards,
    Justin

      Hi Justin,

Thank you for a very detailed feedback.

      1. I understand this as “discard changes for current editing session”. Interesting! I’ll think more about it.
      2. I know about this. Not being able to undo or erase while in zoom mode is a big inconvenience. I’ll try to fix it.
      3. I know about this weakness too. I’m sorting it out. It could be an intelligent algorithm to interpret cross out gesture to delete certain character. Will have it improve.
      4. Yes, yes, yes.

      Thanks again,
      Viet

    Hi,
Dropbox and Notebooks to store notes, could be really great features.
I would keep Notes+, because it’s like the Apple tools but really better :-)

    Thanks, cheers, Fabrice

I would like e capability to store notes in notebooks. Also, if you do audio, it would be great if there would be e capability to save the note with sound embedded, like an HTML document. Finally, I second a request I saw above, Dropbox integration would be great.

    Hi,

Have you considered integrating DropBox in your app?
As a business ipad user, I need to sycnh all my notes with my desktop in the same why other applications do, using DropBox.
    Would be an excellent addition!

I love the current app name, I wouldn’t recommend changing it. Quite the app, looking to be my number one note-taking app when I return to school in the fall.

I’m casting a big vote for Evernote support, I’m a huge user and it’s a bit of a pain to have to email the note to my Evernote account, rather than it being integrated into the app. Voice would be a big plus, and text search + images are a must. Also, maybe adding the option to export as an image – would be nice to draw quick graphs/ graphics for use in other apps. Finally, increasing the size/ bolding the title of the note (at the top of each page) would be nice – It doesn’t seem to stand out sufficiently to me.

Incredible work, your app + Evernote could be the ultimate student iPad combo.

The only thing that language dependent in this app is the Quick Start guide and several buttons. I’ll will see what I can do.

    Hi
    Some suggestions:
    - Blinders to group the Notes
    - Summary
    - Search on all documents
    - An option Outline
    - Export pdf on “ram” to past in an other App like “Gooreader”

      Hi Jose,

Can you elaborate more on “Outline” and “export on ram (cut and paste maybe?)”?

      Thanks,

Love the app, it is my favorite among many note tajing apps I’ve tried.
Issues I’ve identified: selecting text then changing attributes doesn’t change it; selecting items for deletion or moving doesn’t have the granularity it might, sometimes expands to select much more; drawing responsiveness Isnt quite as good as it might be.
Desires: import and resize images, zooming!! (I’d love to be able to zoom way down and still draw at that scale; there was an old project at PARC or SRI I think called infinite paper, which meant one could zoom way down to see much more detail at a smaller scale, I’d love to see some variant of this which would allow making detailed small annotations); the selection of new names for notes is idiosyncratic at best; would be nice to have thumbnails in the notes view; export to an importable format would be useful for sharing and or storage off the iPad.
    Thanks!

      Hi Marc,

Thank you very much for the identified issues and suggestions. I will try to address each of them in the coming versions. About the zooming way down and seeing much detail, it is possible in Notes+ because every drawing is vector based. However, I have to spend a little bit of time to make it right in both aspect: performance and usability.

      Thanks,
      Viet

Hey. This looks absolutely phenomonal. The more I learn the more I like. It looks like you are compteting with notetakerhd, but you have a cleaner ui, palm recognition, support for google docs!!!!, opacity, thickness, and a number of other things that notetaker lacks. However, none of this means anything to me if I can’t get it up onto the big screen! Another vote for VGA support!

How about being able to display notes on a VGA display? Can be a good lecture utility – at the end of the lecture, post the note to a Twitter account to have it available to students…:-)

I like the current “Notes +” name as well. Using “handwriting” suggests other things that I don’t think reflect what the app does. I would keep it the same.

    Hi

i dont like handwrite +, it sounds too specific…

    Why not “Digital notepad” ?

It’s true mental note is using it as a Kind of subtitle, but it seems free.

    Or “Diginotepad” or “Digi-notepad”

    ????

Outstanding app! In schools, we use ms onenote with tablets – we scan in workbook and use images as background and teacher uses pen to write on top of image. Will you ever have this capability – image as background?

    Thanks,
    Ray

    • Viet Tran
      Jun 08, 2010 @ 09:39:39

      Hi Ray,

Thank you for your compliments. Yes, I thought about having a background image and writing over since day one. The problem with this is that some people want to import PDF to write over too. PDF have many pages and if someone tries to import 100-page PDF document, we will definitely have a performance problem. For next version, I will include this feature with a single image as background on a page.

      Best regards,
      Viet
