Hi Beta Testing Team,

Please don’t worry about the ticket priorities for now. I’m in the process of marking “Critical” all tickets to be released in version 3.0.3 and I haven’t done editing all the tickets yet. Thanks C.Sa for letting us know about this.

Version 3.0.3 release will include all the “Critical” tickets, “Export as PDF to Dropbox”, improve iPad 1 performance, change the Vision Object certificate to include more recognition languages. We are in the process of re-writing the Dropbox full-sync. If it is not fully tested by the time we get rid of all the tickets, it will not be released in 3.0.3.

Thanks everyone,

Viet

Dear Beta Testers,

Instead of emailing us your feedback, please post it here so that we all can have discussions and others can see our progress. We have a new build every Monday and Thurday. Check at the top of this page for its status.

We are trying to be as transparent as possible so any screenshots, especially videos, are very welcome. See further instructions below.

Installing the beta build (download links were sent separately to each beta tester):

1. Connect your iPad to the computer and launch iTunes
2. Drag the 2 downloaded files into iTunes. On a Mac, you can just drag them to the iTunes icon in your dock.
3. Select your iPad under DEVICES, then the Apps tab on the right pane. Make sure the new “Notes Plus 3.x” app is checked in the Apps list.
4. Start sync

After the sync, you’ll see an app named “Notes Plus 3.x” on your iPad’s Home screen. Note that this is a separate app and won’t interfere with your current Notes Plus app in any way.

Notes:
1. To make sure you have the right build, always delete Notes Plus 3.x from both your iPad and iTunes before dragging the new build into iTunes and starting the sync.
2. Never put your *only* copy of important data in Notes Plus 3.x as it can go wrong any time and you’ll lose your data, unless you choose to do so at your own risk.

Testing v2 data in Notes Plus 3:

1. Use File Sharing and drop NotesPlusPlus.sqlite into Notes Plus 3.x Documents.
2. Exit the app from the background and relaunch it. Data conversion will kick in.
Please test to make sure v2 data looks (almost) the same as v3 data.

Testing HWR Purchase:

1. Go to iPad Settings > Store. Tap on your Apple ID and “Sign Out”.
2. When trying to “Convert to Text” for the first time, you’ll be asked to purchase it (no real transaction will be made). Use this login info:
- Testing accounts (pick one and test): notesplus3testaccountX@np3.com, where X can be anywhere between 1 and 11, inclusive. 11 seems to work best.
- Password (same for all accounts): NotesPlus3.

Including screenshots in your post:

There are a few image hosting services that require no registration to use. PostImage.org is one of these.
1. Go to http://www.postimage.org/ and upload your screenshots.
2. After the upload process, press “Copy to Clipboard” next to the “Link” field and paste it in your post (WordPress doesn’t allow users to post HTML comments).

Thank you very much for your help.

I thought I’d read this bug report before, but I don’t see it listed in the bug database.

The ‘ABC’ tool does not stick in the tool wheel.

    - Select ‘ABC’ tool to be in the wheel
    - Use it, all is fine, etc.
    - Close NP
    - Open it later.

Presto, the ‘T’ tool is now in the wheel.

I dont kow if this has Belén mentoned before but I noticed that in notes plus is possible to write at the same time with multiple fingers. This results in unwanted behavior like for example when I use four finger up swipe to see the current running apps in my iPad, then four dots or four lines are Drawi in my notebook.

After using notes plus in a real note taking environment, I get my notes with a lot of dots everywhere for one reason or another.

Also the zoom functionality with two finger pinch is very buggy and hard to manipulate.

Also, if I choose pen size 1 which is the one I use every time, the lines in the color palette are so thin that is is difficult to see the color in the buttons.

Yes, I think it was Oscar that mentioned this issue. Viet replied that in version 2, he disabled multitouch gestures (4/+ fingers), but then in some cases the palm of the user would be recognized as such and writing was therefore impossible.
However, Duy already added it to the bug tracker so the dev team will likely try to find a solution for a future issue.

And now I’m reaching for a piece of paper to take my notes (and resisting the urge to throw my iPad throw the wall).

Grrrr. Three crashes in a row. Stability has decreased recently, please bring stability back. I don’t have the capability to assess memory use, but these problems certainly smell like memory problems. I’ve been trying to use beta NP more and more for real work so I’m forced to use it in real conditions and it’s just not yet ready.

All three crashes (the last one was me attempting to re-created the problem) were close-up writing on a page with text typed using the ‘T’ tool. The crashes all happened subsequent to copying using NP’s capture tool from the browser panel and pasting it to the page I was working on. App crashed to main screen and when re-opened has lost some of my recent writing.

Viet wants us testers to be harsh on you developers and while that’s not in my nature . . . “C’mon guys, this is not going the right direction. Of the four bugs you claim are fixed in this build two of them are NOT fixed. Stability has taken a LARGE step backwards. I am NOT impressed with the most recent beta builds.”

I have to admit the stability on 2/20 build becomes worse on iPad 1 (I’m testing mostly with iOS4.3.5), especially on close-up view when the page is full of strokes and I attempt to use mixed tools with multiple objects. This looks better on iPad 2. For iPad 2, the rendering mechanism is still slowly and turning page not so smooth.

Paste is not undo-able? From the browser panel I copied a bit of text from a web page (not using NPs capture, but an actual copy). Then in the ‘T’ tool on the edit panel I copied the text in.

I changed my mind and hit undo and was very surprised that it started undo-ing my inking instead of undo-ing the paste!

I see that undo does nothing in the ‘T’ tool, including undo-ing typing. This seems like a bug to me.

      Mark F,

I saw a comment that said that you can use the UNDO button on the keyboard to Undo typing/paste (press “.?123″ key, UNDO key is in the same area). I did not know that this existed until reading that comment.

I guess that is part of iOS. Text is a different kind of “object” in iOS. It works.
I kinda agree that this does not seem User friendly. Not sure how this could be changed in Notes Plus as the OS is controlling this function.

Personal OPINION: I’m not sure what the “T” tool is best used for.
NP 2 did what the “ABC” tool does now, and the “T” tool was added to allow typing Text on the whole page, like a typewriter?
I usually avoid using “T” and prefer “ABC” instead.

QUESTION: What do other NP Users use the “T” tool for?
Maybe I just don’t understand how to properly use the “T” tool…. ;-(

Philip (Ok, NOW I know what that button does. Cool ;-) )

I think I use the ‘T’ tool because it makes more sense to me. Try as I might, getting the font selection and size to be correct with the ‘ABC’ tool is just a mess. I’ve discovered and reported that when you select an existing block of text created with the ‘ABC’ tool, you can’t (as one would reasonably expect) open the text dialog and change the font type and size. Doing so does nothing. No, you need to open the dialog, change to what you want. Then close the dialog, and select what you just changed in the text wheel. Then select that to actually make the change. Rather byzantine.

Also, I can’t get the ‘ABC’ tool to stay as an option in the tool wheel (another bug). So it’s inconvenient to select the tool.

Bug 357 is marked as a duplicate of bug 320 which is marked as ready for SQA. The underlying bug is NOT fixed in the 2/20 build. I see no change whatsoever in the behavior.

    Bug 301 is NOT fixed.

If I prepend several carriage returns before typing with the ‘T’ tool, change pages, then back again, the text is back at the top of the page.

I know I wrote about this several weeks ago, but I don’t think it’s in the bug list. While in text mode, a long hold to get the magnifying glass usually does not work. If you do a long press brief in the same location as and shortly after a quick tap then it will usually work. Otherwise it doesn’t. Very disruptive to not obey standard Apple UI here. I think this has been around since the start of V3.

This isn’t specific to this build, and is a UI request.

Please maintain pen and text settings on a per notebook setting rather than globally. I do different things with different notebooks and it’s a pain to have to reset my pen and text setting as I travel between notebooks.

+1 for Pen/Text settings saved PER NOTEBOOKs.
(and pages settings, and many other Document related settings? Eh??)

Plus, Did I read that the Pen (& Text) settings on the Palette were changing from the “most recent”, to ones that the User could select, and keep? Please PLEEEEASE.
I thought I saw a discussion about this somewhere on this Blog but can’t find the reference.
      - The “most recent” Pens/Text settings is a pain-in-the-backside.

+ I want to be able to select, and/or set, which Pens/Text are in the Top Menu bar.
Let the user Decide. If the User does not change defaults, then fine with “most recent”, but … Did I mention: Let the User decide!

++ And if the Users are very good, maybe a Pen/Text Palette on the Closeup Box?!?!?!
      That would be heaven.

So why does Notes Plus use so much memory?
Why does it save a notebook as single pages?
Why is each page saved as a folder?
Why does each page-folder contain 3+ files?
Why are PDFs being blown up when import and then export?
Why is Notes Plus slow sometimes even on an iPad 2?

I favor run-time efficiency over space if that trade off is necessary. I don’t like that exported PDFs are HUGE! Performance is creaky and I’m disappointed to hear that it can be poor even on an iPad 2.

Major regression with this build! The left browser panel will not display ANYTHING unless the document is a PDF notebook. Then I left NP turned off for several hours and I come back and it works ok. When NP was not working, the only display for a non-PDF notebook was a small, blue “Page 1″ in the upper left of the screen.

Now it works and I can’t get it duplicate, but it was reliably failing. I could bounce around many notebooks and see only PDF notebooks rendered.

One more point of information that is maybe important. I had just installed the 2/20 build and dropped a notebooks.zip file onto the app via iTunes. Perhaps it was busy doing whatever conversion it does so it couldn’t properly render the browser panel. I don’t know if that’s significant or not, but another data point for duplication of the bug.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but I couldn’t find a ticket for it. The majority of the time when I import a PDF that was exported in presentation notes format (small slides on the left and lines on the right) from Keynote, Notes Plus will render 1-3 of the imported pages completely blank, removing their content. This makes it so I have to import the same document multiple times, as the deletions are random, to be able to get all of the pages. Then, I copy the intact pages from the second imported PDF into the PDF in which they were blank, deleting the blank pages from the first PDF. I just noticed this on the current public version, but have not yet checked it with the new 2/20/12 testing version out today. I hope to do so today when I get home, but am not sure if I will be able to. Anyone able to reproduce this?

Hmmmm, Taking wild arse guesses here. ( aka: S.W.A.G. )

      1. What processing is NP doing when it “Imports” PDF files?

1.1 Is this where NP splits the file into individual pages?
Can we test without this step/process?
I’m VERY CONCERNED that something at the Import Step is causing BIG problems. Maybe a Test release that does not do whatever process is happening.

1.2 Maybe Viet could explain what steps are happening when when a PDF is imported (AND Exported). Something is happening to cause problems and the testers have no idea what to do, or not do, to track down the problem. Let’s brainstorm and see if we can come up with some ideas for the development team to test.

      2. Before Imports, Exports, and other intensive tasks – maybe that would that be a good time to do something like a Memory FLUSH?
It may be a waste of time, but maybe it will changes something so you can discover the low MEMORY causes and/or crashes??
2.1 iOS Apps should not crash JUST due to Low Memory condition.
Degrade, slow down, Flush Memory, grind to a halt, but NOT hard CRASH.

The Testers are using a BETA TEST version of NP. Maybe we need some debug code.
Maybe writing iPad States/Memory/errors codes/something to a NP test file.
Can NP process a plain text file?

      Hi Justin,

If you went to take a look at the Version 3 page (not beta), you’d see that there have been multiple reports about this issue already. Or at least I remember reading a lot of them a while ago. Indeed, the devs are conscious of the issue but haven’t been able to fix it thoroughly yet… However, I haven’t noticed the problem occurring on the builds yet, with same imported PDF files. So I guess we can consider that as improvement?
Anyways, I’m sure the dev team knows that their PDF import/export isn’t quite stable yet after everything we’ve reported… Now they just need to find a way to wipe out ALL flaws for a future update.
As Philippe said though, it would be great if we were provided a way to track down the crash problems once for all…

I like the idea of the new sort by date button, but I question its usefulness with the current implementation. I have absolutely no interest in sorting my notebooks by creation date. However, sorting them by last modified date would be immensely useful.

The same arguments about the type of date that NotesPlus is presenting to the user that I’ve made about pages within a notebook hold for the date for the notebook or folder as a whole.

+1 for an option to sort by DATE: option for Creation Date OR Last Modified Date.

I would guess that both dates are already available within NP 3.
      - Just allow the user to specify which date they want to sort by.
      - I believe that most Users would be using the Modified Date after they become familiar with NP. So let the User decide and move on to the next issue??

          Wait, ;-)

I was agreeing with your request to have Modified Date.
I must be attending to many management meetings – offering multiple options.
For my purposes I could like with only the Modified Date.

Philip ( going to sulk now, as I can’t test as much as Mark F can. Hats off to you, Sir! ;-) )

Yes, this makes sense. I’d prefer to have a custom setting to allow choosing the suitable date sort method (date creation or last modifed date).

    2/20 build, iPad 1, 4.3.5

App crash. I pulled up NotesPlus to demonstrate the app to my mom. I opened a new document, opened the close-up box, wrote a few words, and bang, the app crashed. I assume it’s related to memory, but I don’t know. I certainly hadn’t done much with it at all before it crashed.

I’ve been experiencing an increase in crashes with the last few builds that appear to be memory related. I realize I am using both an older iPad and an older OS. However, I’m fairly sure that are millions of users in the same category as myself. What are some specific ways that I as a beta tester can help track down memory related crashes?

The memory leak is really a big issue of Notes Plus on iPad 1. The current codebase of Notes Plus becomes complicated so it’s not easy at all to track down all of memory leak issues.

Our Dev team are doing some measurement and analysis to figure out where is the root causes. This will require more effort and let’s hope they can solve these holes.

    2/16 build, ipad 1, 4.3.5

Re-occurrence of bug 208 (I found another way to make it happen).

    - Password protect a folder
    - navigate to within the password protected folder while a notebook from a non password protected folder is open for editing
    - close the app
    - re-open app.
    - The browse library pane is still within the password protected folder, allowing for navigation within it showing notebook names.

True, you can’t open any of the notebooks without knowing the password, but the folder contents should not be shown either.

      Thanks Mark,

I added your steps to ticket #208 so our Dev Team can fix it too.

    *Another shutout for I-Funbox*

    http://www.i-funbox.com/

A couple of the features I really enjoy with this app is not only the ability to browse the iPad files system but also the ability to flash install the App without having to delete everything from the iPad and start over.

It is also a free app and is available on Mac and Windows platforms.

    Best,

This is one of the most useful tools that I often use to transfer files with iPad. Definitely a recommended app for anyone who uses iOS devices. I think I (or Toan) should collect useful tip about this app and share with our Notes Plus users :-)

Update on a frustrating behavior I previously reported, but dropped because I hadn’t given specific enough instructions to reproduce it.

On a page in landscape mode, long press on the first line or somewhere close to the top of the page to go into close-up mode. Then manually move the gray dotted box to the bottom of the page and start writing something. Now exit close-up mode, and the page will shift back to the position it was in when you entered close-up mode, so that you can’t see what you just wrote at the bottom.
It’s the same for portrait mode, but it’s easier to notice the behavior in landscape mode since the portion of the page that you see is much smaller.
The steps are only a way to reproduce the problem on purpose, since nobody would actually manually go to the bottom of the page without having written anything in between, but just regularly using the “Go down” arrow or the carriage return arrow would lead to the same result. So if you started taking notes at the very top of the page in close-up mode and reached the bottom of the page without exiting close-up mode, but suddenly needed to draw something in *normal* mode, the page would shift up before you could do it. I understand that this may be out of design, but it’s not practical at all. Besides, the page should logically always show what was last written, no matter if you’re coming out of close-up mode or not!

More on this issue. If you entered close-up mode at the top of a page and wrote something down, but went back to the previous page through the navigation bar on the box and manually moved down to the bottom of the page to correct something, as soon as you get out of close-up mode, the page you’re currently on will move back to the top, and you can’t see what you just corrected. This should definitely not be the case.

I have been using the beta dated 10 feb (haven’t received the link to the more recent builds) to take notes in all my meetings since I have received it (11 notebooks, 5-6 pages p notebook) with no loss of data.

I haven’t tried the character recognition (hadn’t read the instructions on how to install it in the beta version), and haven’t tried dropbox sync again (didn’t get it to work on the beta version).

I do have a few comments on usability:

    • I feel (no ‘scientific measurement’) that speed is declining: it feels like it takes longer to see first page when I launch notes plus or to turn pages, but it could be my memory playing games.

    • in the zoom box, the lag is long enough for me to lose strokes when
      – the gray par appears for the first time on the left of the zoom box (first move to the right)
      – the gray box moves to the next line (carriage return).

The GUI to move pages around is cumbersome. Drag and drop of individual pages as in noteshelf would be great.

I find there are too many clicks to get to export. I would welcome an export button directly on the middle bar.

I would really like to be able to select ink in the zoom box, e.g. to change the colour of the stroke or to move a word to insert new text.

I also noticed that Dropbox appeared in the open-in menu. Made me wish I could ‘open in’ the webarchive files.

Keep up the good work !

    Alain

      Alain,
The link for newer builds should always be the same.
You might try downloading from the link that have and see.
I know that the link I have used on the Alpha team has stayed the same throughout.

      Hope that helps,

      +1 on performance.

With the 2/20 build I am noticing a degradation in performance in the close-up box. I haven’t spent a lot of time with it, but pulling it up quickly to write a single test line I got lots of dropped ink.

I’ll continue research and testing in this area on my flight home this evening,

I also notice the inking experience is still sluggishness while on close-up box and this is really annoying. The lost strokes issue is still a hard one for our Dev Team since it’s not happening all the time. It might happen when saving function is triggered while writing in close-up box. Our Dev is trying hard to fix it.

“… this is really annoying” No, the phrase is “… this is causing me to look elsewhere for an app.”

The 3.0.3 beta builds are better for performance, but still have their oddities and dropped ink.

Unfortunately with the recent loss of stability I am forced to choose between a more stable app (released 3.0.2) that is rather bad at inking or one that is better at inking but may crash at any time causing a loss of data. Given this choice the option of another app starts to look very attractive.

I know I’m harping on this and I know you’re not trying to downplay the critical-ness of the inking problem or the stability problems, but you developers need to realize that we users are past being really annoyed.

P.S. While using 3.0.2 last night it crashed on me as well!

Nice job! Very detailed post, Alain!

I agree with you that we still have a lot of work with performance matter. Viet is working on scroll gesture to move pages (just like previous version 2). It should be done soon.

Your other suggestions are well-noted. We’ll re-prioritize our items.
