Dear Beta Testers,
Instead of emailing us your feedback, please post it here so that we all can have discussions and others can see our progress. We have a new build every Monday and Thursday. Check at the top of this page for its status.
We are trying to be as transparent as possible so any screenshots, especially videos, are very welcome. See further instructions below.
Installing the beta build (download links were sent separately to each beta tester):
1. Connect your iPad to the computer and launch iTunes
2. Drag the 2 downloaded files into iTunes. On a Mac, you can just drag them to the iTunes icon in your dock.
3. Select your iPad under DEVICES, then the Apps tab on the right pane. Make sure the new “Notes Plus 3.x” app is checked in the Apps list.
4. Start sync
After the sync, you’ll see an app named “Notes Plus 3.x” on your iPad’s Home screen. Note that this is a separate app and won’t interfere with your current Notes Plus app in any way.
Notes:
1. To make sure you have the right build, always delete Notes Plus 3.x from both your iPad and iTunes before dragging the new build into iTunes and starting the sync.
2. Never put your *only* copy of important data in Notes Plus 3.x as it can go wrong any time and you’ll lose your data, unless you choose to do so at your own risk.
Testing v2 data in Notes Plus 3:
1. Use
File Sharing and drop
NotesPlusPlus.sqlite into
Notes Plus 3.x Documents.
2. Exit the app from the background and relaunch it. Data conversion will kick in.
Please test to make sure v2 data looks (almost) the same as v3 data.
Including screenshots in your post:
There are a few image hosting services that require no registration to use. PostImage.org is one of these.
1. Go to http://www.postimage.org/ and upload your screenshots.
2. After the upload process, press “Copy to Clipboard” next to the “Link” field and paste it in your post (WordPress doesn’t allow users to post HTML comments).
Thank you very much for your help.

Hello NotesPlus Team!
We dont’t want to have to write in a zoom box!
I LOVE your App, but can’t hardly wait for byzero pen support! I understand that debugging has priority, but seriously – capacitive pens are crap! The iPad isn’t made for writing on it. So the byzero pen is a great revolution! The zoom function is cool, but it’s not more than a workaround for the crappy pens
PLEASE invest some more work for integrating the electronic pens! It would be absolutely awesome if you add support in v3.0.3. I really can’t wait!!!
Best wishes,
David
Feb 21, 2012 @ 08:03:55
Hi David,
Sooner or later, we will get ByZero’s support in place. It’s just a matter of time since we’re struggling with several major tasks. We’ll consider what’s best for our users and anything that users can take advantage, then prioritize and add to Notes Plus.
Hopefully the good news will arrive soon
Thanks,
-Duy

anybody planning on getting an iPad 3 for testing?
I’m considering it.
Feb 20, 2012 @ 09:40:27
Hmmmmm,
For testing? Yay, that’s what it will be for …. Testing.
Philip ( wonders if the Mrs. Will buy that one. Sigh

Sorry oscar,
I was making a joke, about convincing “My” wife that “I” need a new iPad 3, for testing purposes.
As she has my old iPad 1 and I have an iPad 2, the possibilities are slight.
I agree that as many version of iOS and iPads need to be tested as possible. I’m sure some Users will want to upgrade to iPad 3 — and wonder what problems that might cause.
Back on topic, I wonder if Notes Plus 3 is starting to exceed the resources of the iPad 1.
- I don’t think there should be different versions for different iPads, but some features might need to be restricted/reduced on old iPads.
– or maybe warnings that certain features might exceed resources??
- I’m not sure how NP could marketed if the User had to upgrade to new iPad 3.
Philip ( darn, Wife joke falls flat. ;-( )
Feb 23, 2012 @ 06:04:36
I’m pretty sure vector drawing programs have existed for computers with less power than the iPad1…

Missing Feature: Export function for Recognized / Typed Text
The only way to export recognized hand-written test is to copy from text box and paste into another application. This is really clunky.
The app needs dedicated ways to export the text. Suggestions:
* “Export” function in text box pop-up menu
* “Export all page text”
* “Export all notebook text”
Feb 21, 2012 @ 07:59:55
Hi Tony,
We have a plan to do this in the near futures. It should be straightforward.
Thanks for your feedback,

This was in production 3.0.2 release, but it can’t be fully verified now because Delete pages is broken. Once that is fixed, this should be retested.
Making Multiple Edits to Notebook at Same Time Fail
Making more than one type of edit to a notebook partly fails
* Browse library. View notebook pages.
* Click Edit
* Select one page
* Change title of another page
* Click Red Delete X and Accept
Only rename or delete takes hold. The other does not happen.
Feb 19, 2012 @ 19:25:59
Delete Page from Notebook does not work / Crashes App
Two different scenarios. Start with new notebook and add page
#1 — Doesn’t work
* Click edit button
* select either page
* Delete with red X, accept delete
* Page still exists
#2 – Crashes App
* Swipe right margin of task
* Press delete button
* CRASH

This was a bug in the 2/9 build that was fixed in the current 2/16 build. Please verify that you have the latest beta build.
Feb 21, 2012 @ 07:56:49
This issue should not happen in latest build. Anyone else got this issue?
Thanks,

Notes Plus uses WAY TOO MUCH memory you need to work on consuming less. I have a jailbroken app and I can see the memory being used live on the status bar and only high graphics games use this much memory.
How can a notetaking app use up this much memory and run slow on the latest model iPad. I cant imagine how it runs on an iPad 1.
with the iPad 3 coming out soon I’m sure it would be less noticeable but still.
here are some tests I ran with other apps I use regularly.
Nothing running on background restarted iPad every time and then used the app for 1 minute normal use and then tried to push it to the limits.
my iPad show 245MB when idle and nothing running
Notability ran at 200 MB free for the minute then when I pushed it it went down to 138 which was the minimum it ever saw.
Notes Plus as soon as you start it goes down to 190, then i created a new page and used the close up mode to write and it slowly started decreasing to an amazing 109! when i stopped writing it went back up to 140 and stayed there even when not doing anything. then I wrote as fast as i could for about 5 to 6 sentences and it went all the way to 83MB! I turned inking effect off and still ran at 93Mb so inking is not the problem.
Penultimate ran at 210 and only went down to 205 when changing pages
then i played a game on my ipad and the lowest it dropped to was 110
(spice bandits is the name) I didnt use infinity blade because I don’t have it.
but spice bandits is a universal app and it runs extremely slow in my iphone 4 so I thought it would be a good one to test with.
I couldn’t Make Notes Plus crash so that’s good, but I’m sure it would have crashed on an iPad 1.
Feb 19, 2012 @ 18:57:52
It crashes all the fucking time on an iPad1 — I do the same memory monitoring, same story, but far less RAM. I start with maybe 100MB, and it’ll usually hover around 20MB free. It definitely closes if you try to zoom out. I’m terrified of using it… good point on the games.. can we just switch to OpenGL for rendering?
I can count on one hand the number of times a piece of paper has either spontaneously combusted or turned into a raw quantum soup while I was using it.. there aren’t enough hands in my university to record the same statistics for NotesPlus on an iPad1..
Feb 21, 2012 @ 07:55:44
That’s a good post, Oscar!
The performance matter is really a big headache for our Dev Team and it’s driving us insanely. Notes Plus takes up too much resources of iPad and we have to solve it if we want to improve the performance, especially on iPad 1. The code has become complicated since v3.0 so this needs extra effort from our Dev Team to get it done. Let’s hope to hear the good news from Dev Team about performance improvement.
Stayed tuned!

Anyone having success using scrubbing to delete handwriting. If yes, what is your technique?
Feb 19, 2012 @ 17:11:25
On an iPad 2, what I usually do is draw tight vertical zigzags on the word I want to erase. However, I have to admit that that same gesture doesn’t always work… I personally prefer the deletion gesture though.
Feb 19, 2012 @ 17:54:15
I think you key word was “vertical”.
I tried again with upright strokes and was much more successful. Also needed to makes sure the strokes covered the area to be deleted.
Feb 20, 2012 @ 11:36:19
Yes, the scrubbing gesture doesn’t work as well if you only want to erase 1-2 strokes because it’s really hard to just cover those strokes specifically…
How did you do it previously then? Maybe there should be a better definition for it in the settings.
Feb 21, 2012 @ 07:49:23
The scrubbing gestures works for me, but it’s tricky. You should scrub your finger quickly and it just works well if you attempt to erase a long sentence. For words with several strokes, it’s difficult to use this gesture.

Feb 19, 2012 @ 05:28:14
why when you create a notebook with two or more pdf’s you can only see the first one on the left side (browser)?
I imported 3 pdfs and I added the pages of two of those pdf’s to the third pdf. to make a single notebook with all three pdfs so that I have them all in one place and it ‘would’ be easy for me when taking notes if I need to refer to those they will be in the same place so i could just scroll through them (very convinient) BUT, the problem is when you open the notebook in the left side you can only scroll through the first pdf (the one that created the notebook when I imported) and the other pages are just not accessible.very inconvinient. My proffessor emails us handouts as PDFs (usually about 2-5pages) so by now I have about 20 different handouts and it would be nice to have them all in one notebook and be able to scroll through them all.
Also regular non-PDF notebooks should be able to scroll on the left side to view.
having to tap on the little arrows to scroll through them is too slow.
Feb 19, 2012 @ 16:50:33
+1
I’ve had this discussion with the dev team before. A notebook that is an imported PDF will always render as only the original PDF on the left panel. This includes not showing additional pages as well as inked annotations. This is working as designed, but my contention is that this is a design error. It’s a reasonable user expectation that the left panel would render exactly as the right panel.
Feb 21, 2012 @ 07:42:40
Hi Oscar and Mark,
Your reports make sense. I would prefer the actual PDF notebook should display on the left-handed mode. I’m going to file a feature request ticket for this matter.
Thanks,
-Duy
Feb 19, 2012 @ 03:25:45
Hi,
When I open notes plus on my ipad2 whilst playing music via AirPlay to my appletv, the iPad stops detecting my appletv and the music switches to my iPad speaker. When I exit notes plus and close it completely (double-tap on home key click on the no-entry sign on the notes plus icon) the music replays again on my appletv.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jamie
Feb 19, 2012 @ 17:10:01
Also if you are playing a song recording feature doesn’t work it shows a message saying “if you Dont want background music to mix with your recordigm use headphones ” with options to record or cancel
Pressed record then the mic icon starts flashing as if was recording when you press it again to stop recording it shows the same message and whatever you press it will sto but the there will be no recording saved
Feb 21, 2012 @ 07:40:04
Bug confirmed. See ticket http://notesplusapp.com/ticket/368
Feb 18, 2012 @ 23:47:16
Minor bug:
2/16 build (3.0.2 too)
In close-up mode, writing in the area above the close-up box normally shouldn’t work. But if you go to the very top, just underneath the silver frame of the Notes Plus app, and start writing, you’ll realize that it works.
Just as the screenshot shows, if you start where the big red dot is, you can write on that area: http://postimage.org/image/yiekkj64b/
Feb 19, 2012 @ 01:28:18
Yeah I could reproduce this, but the writing does not stay, as soon as you let go it disappears
iPad 2 5.0.1
NP3.0.3 2/16
Feb 19, 2012 @ 12:04:02
Yes, Oscar is right. I forgot to precise that the handwriting doesn’t stay, therefore it’s just a minor bug.
Feb 21, 2012 @ 07:33:01
I think this is still acceptable behavior. I can file a ticket for it later with minor priority.

Feb 18, 2012 @ 17:37:39
I don’t know if it was meant to be this way, but when I try to sync 3.0.3 (have only tried on 2/16 build) to dropbox it takes me to the usual dropbox where you allow the app and once i allow it sends me to the 3.0.2 app instead of 3.0.3. so basically there is no way to sync 3.0.3
Feb 19, 2012 @ 08:41:16
Hi Oscar,
That’s because our Dev team doesn’t configure a separated dropbox folder for beta build. By the way, we don’t change anything related to Dropbox, therefore please do not test Dropbox on v3.0.3 yet.
Thanks,
-Duy
Feb 18, 2012 @ 11:14:05
IPad 1, Build: 2.16.2012
Confirm sluggish performance on IPad1. Performance only slightly better with turning auto sync off.
Critical memory issue/leak with zooming in and out of full screen creating instability and crash soon afterword.
Feb 18, 2012 @ 01:16:01
Just a bit of motivation for the team:
I moved a few notebooks to Notability and I was like “Alright let me give notability yet another try”
I started to try do my Homework on Notability and I just couldn’t. Notability has Many features that I prefer over Notes Plus but overall I just love NP and I cant go back to any other app.
I love the way Notability organizes your notebooks and the syncing options to dropbox in there are the best ever, but I for some reason I just cant work on Notability. I wasted 30 mins trying to get started on HW.
keep up the work and I hope you can make Notes Plus better. know that we are here to help so listen to us. Everything is possible so don’t say you cant do something when clearly other apps can.
If its possible in any app in the appstore then it should be possible in Notes Plus. That’s how You get to the top and stay there.
Once NP is stable enough I have a plethora of improvements and features you guys can work on, maybe we’ll see them in Notes Plus 4.0, who knows.
Good job guys,
KEEP IT UP!!
Feb 18, 2012 @ 03:18:08
Oscar,
I totally agree. Even with some of the things going on NoteaPlus just has something about it that makes it just work.
Something ant the flow of things, it is hard to put a get on.
The best part is that it is only going to get better.
I think all of the bumps in development has caused Viet to really get a better handle on the dev process and helping the other programmers to catch his vision for how NotesPlus can continue to get better
Best,
Simeon
Feb 18, 2012 @ 03:20:36
Auto correct strikes again.
The following:
Something ant the flow of things, it is hard to put a get on.
The best part is that it is only going to get better.
Should be:
Something about the flow of things, it is hard to put a finger on exactly what.
The best part is that it can only get better.
All the best,
Simeon
Feb 18, 2012 @ 06:04:17
+110 percent support
Please don’t let Dropbox Sync hamper/delay/impede the progress of Notes Plus 3.
+ I’d rather do manual Syncs then continue to so many Dropbox problems.
Philip ( God grant me patience, and I want it Right NOW!
)
Feb 18, 2012 @ 15:50:47
Thanks, oscar, Simeon, Philippe, and others for the encouragements. I know that this waiting worn out everybody’s patience. However, think about a better future (and the mistakes we made in the past); if we rush, it’s just get worse. It hurts me more than everybody else but I have to sacrifice to make sure the next release to be solid.
Viet
Feb 18, 2012 @ 23:34:43
Bravo Viet,
Please continue to … Refine Notes Plus.
Philip ( sometimes it best to go slow to, go fast?!?
)
Feb 19, 2012 @ 01:14:24
I agree also. I dip into Notability or Penultimate occasionally to see what they’re up to, and I do like some of the individual elements (mostly inking performance), but I’ve never managed to make a transition to actually using them. I just like Notes Plus and what it does. When the rough edges are filed off it will be even more wonderful and useful than it is now.
Feb 17, 2012 @ 21:30:42
2/16 build, iPad 1, 4.3.5
Pen dialog settings don’t stick
- Insert a shape
- Open Pen dialog
- Set Stroke and use a fill shape
- Close dialog and verify that the shape is properly filled in
- Open Pen dialog
- Change stroke size
Notice that the shape is no longer filled even though the dialog specified that it should have been.
Feb 23, 2012 @ 13:36:01
Thanks, Mark. It’s in the tracker now: http://notesplusapp.com/ticket/377.
Feb 17, 2012 @ 21:22:17
2/16 build, iPad 1, 4.3.5
Not all elements are in an exported page are included.
- Create a new page
- Insert several pictures from photo library
- Select one of the pictures by tapping on it, then tapping on the lock icon
This selected picture will not be present when exporting via a PDF or an image to either e-mail or using the “Open In…” function.
Furthermore when I exported the entire notebook as a webarchive and e-mailed it to myself, when I opened it in NP3.0.3 from the e-mail program, it was completely blank.
Feb 19, 2012 @ 08:38:19
Bug confirmed (http://notesplusapp.com/ticket/367)
Feb 17, 2012 @ 21:13:58
2/16 build, iPad 1, 4.3.5
Can delete an object from a read-only page.
- Start new page
- Insert a picture
- While the picture is still selected, make the page read-only from the Tools menu
- The picture can be deleted
Yes, this is an edge case. Changing pages or notebooks and back to the corrects the problem, but marking a page read-only should probably de-select active objects also.
Feb 19, 2012 @ 08:36:28
It’s a minor issue, however it’s nice to fix it (http://notesplusapp.com/ticket/366)
Feb 19, 2012 @ 16:51:48
Yes, agree, it’s very minor.
Feb 17, 2012 @ 17:46:12
2/16 build, iPad 1, 4.3.5
My personal vote would be that when copying a page the read-only attribute is removed. But I suspect there are just as many people on the other side.
Feb 17, 2012 @ 20:07:54
Why would anyone need two identical pages unless one is kept intact and the other is going to be modified?
Feb 17, 2012 @ 20:58:34
Yes, that’s my thinking for the request.
Feb 19, 2012 @ 08:31:40
In my opinion, we should still keep the attribute that was set by user to ease the process. Copy is the same as duplication and it would cause confused to users if we change the attribute while copying.
-Duy
Feb 19, 2012 @ 17:01:20
I disagree, but I can live with having to remove the read-only attribute EVERY SINGLE TIME I do this operation (emphasis to show how burdensome this design decision is on the user).
However, maintaining the creation date when making a copy (a NEW copy that was created on a different date) makes the date field useless. If you’re going to present the creation date you might as well remove displaying the date completely, it serves little to no purpose.
The last modified date, however, would be very useful.
Here’s my use case for this in case it helps.
I have some template pages that are the first couple of pages of several notebooks. The template pages themselves I don’t modify and are thus marked as read-only. Every time I need to make a new entry in the notebook (constantly), I copy a template page to the same notebook, making a BRAND NEW copy of the page the new last page of the document. I then annotate on the new page to record whatever it is that this notebook contains.
I would very much like to know the date that I made the NEW page (as V2 did for me) as well as be able to instantly edit the page.
With the design of V3 I have to make an additional step of removing the read-only attribute. Additionally, I have lost the time stamp of the date on which I created the new page. I regard V3 a distinct step backwards from V2 in this regard.

Mark F,
Interesting argument for your usage case. Wonder if other Users would use it the same way, or some other way? More comments?
Thanks for sharing your usage with the NP community.

3.0.3
I finally figured out why when I try to tap a pen favorite, or eraser, etc from the top row, that the pick wheel appears.
The cause is I have the palm rest open and my palm is resting on it. If I raise my palm off the screen, I tap as expected vs the pick wheel popping up.
I believe it should not have to lift my palm off the screen, but at least the cause is known.

Forgot to mention, I can use the arrows at the top to change pages while my palm is resting.

Hi Keith,
Just wanted to let you know that I already reported this problem a while ago.

Here it is; check it out!

Build 2/13, iPad 2, 5.0.1
I ran into a strange problem involving both the released version 3 and the beta 3.0.3 (all builds, it seems)
I was using the released V3 and linked to dropbox. apparently I also linked one of the beta builds to dropbox somewhere along the way. Anyway, I tried to link V3 and sync and funny thing happened… it took me to beta 3.0.3! Every time. So, I deleted the beta, deleted Dropbox data/folder. Tried to link V3 to dropbox, it give me the dialog to link, but stays in Dropbox and does not return to V3 to sync. Settings menu still shows that Dropbox is connected, but no syncing is occurring. It wouldn’t even make a new NotesPlus folder in Dropbox.
Any ideas on what to do?

Feb 16, 2012 @ 20:58:09
I’ve encountered this problem before while mixing and matching release and beta with dropbox testing. The only reliable way I found to get my system back to sanity was to completely remove all instances of NP and re-install. Now I have neither released NP nor the betas linked to Dropbox. It’s a bit of a mess, hopefully this next beta will have the problem that leads to this situation resolved.
If you do go this route, it’s easy to completely restore notebooks by exporting through itunes, zipping the notebooks folders, then re-importing after the new installation. I don’t know if there is a similar easy way to recover audio recordings.
Feb 16, 2012 @ 21:20:14
I figured I might have to do that…

2/13 build, iPad 1, 4.3.5
As a developer sometimes I look at the bug reports passed to me and I wonder, “Who would ever try to do that?” This may well be one of those cases!
Notebook and folder renaming.
- Create a notebook (“Sub1″)
- Create another notebook or folder and name it “Sub1″. The system will name it “Sub1 copy”
- Edit the second notebook and attempt to rename it to “Sub1″.
The system will detect that this name already exists and pop the dialog about having to add a copy to the name. The resulting name of the notebook will be “Sub1 copy copy”. If you then attempt to rename the notebook to “Sub1″ the resulting name becomes “Sub1 copy”.
Feb 16, 2012 @ 19:24:16
Thanks Mark F.
I sometimes wonder that same thing – WHY would a User this this thing?
In the end it doesn’t matter. As much as possible, the App should protect the User from errors and making mistakes. Like NEVER defaulting to a condition that would lead to data loss.
So that means looking in dark corners while testing. Fun huh??
At the same time the User should be protected for errors, the User should be able to (reliability) use the program to do (almost) whatever they want. User will find new ways to use Apps. As long as that does lead to errors, they should be permitted

More on the dates shown in the library browser. I’d like some clarification on what the dates represent. Both the date shown on the notebook as well as the dates shown for each individual page.
The page date does not change when the page is editing. When I copied a page the new page has the same date as the original. I don’t know what this date is supposed to represent, but it would have to be either the creation or last changed date. In any case, a new version of a page from a copy should have a new date. If I move a page, the date should be retained, but a copy is a new version.
In any case, I hope the date is supposed to represent the last changed time. In this case, it doesn’t work.
Feb 19, 2012 @ 08:05:54
At this moment, the timestamp you see for each notebook/page is actually the date creation, not the last changed time. It’s by designed. Actually the app also records last changed time for each notebook/page, but we don’t show it in the UI. We’ll implement sort by last changed time soon (same as v2.3.6)

I’m puzzled by the note above about the 2/16 build. Is Dropbox exporting enabled or not for beta testers?

What do the dates on the page view in the library browser tab represent? I thought they were the last modified date of the page. If they are, this isn’t working. I just modified a page and it still shows the creation date of the page.
Feb 17, 2012 @ 10:05:45
The dates on the page view is actually the creation date, it’s not the last modified date.
-Duy
Feb 17, 2012 @ 17:44:18
Hmm, in that case my feedback is that the creation date isn’t all that useful. Last modified date would be MUCH more useful to present.
And I’ll reiterate what I wrote yesterday as a bug report. When I copy a page I expect that the creation date of the new page should reflect the current date, NOT the date of the source page. After all, a copy is a new page.
But please consider changing the date shown to be the last modified date. I believe that V2 acted that way, and I used that feature to know when my log notebooks have been updated.

Build 2/13; iPad 2; 5.0.1
This is what I am seeing:
Import PDF, annotate then change the page setting for the entire notebook.
PDF backgrounds remain and nothing seems to be changed, however, if you add a page, using the arrows, the chosen background from settings is there. Here is where it gets funky. If you change the background again, the added page becomes blank, and if you add more pages using the arrow, they show the newly chosen background. Change again, and the added pages become blank, and adding a new page gives you the new background. The previously added pages will not change backgrounds. You only get the new background by adding a page using the arrows. It is good that the PDF pages don’t change, but I would think that any added pages in the notebook should be fully editable, changing page settings, etc.

Hi Robyn,
Are you still able to reproduce this issue with build 2/16? I’m unable to replicate it by following your steps. Just let us know if you can see this bug.
Thanks,
-Duy
Feb 19, 2012 @ 08:03:17
Well, finally I can repro this issue. It’s a little bit tricky to get it. I’ve filed a ticket for this issue : http://notesplusapp.com/ticket/365 . It seems to happen for large PDF notebook which has more than 50 pages, tried to repro a 30-page notebook and can’t replicate it.
Feb 16, 2012 @ 00:02:18
2/13 build, iPad 1, 4.3.5
Experienced another crash (these are rare enough to be surprising now).
I was working in the notebook I’ve been using for experimenting with read-only pages. I had deleted all but the first page which was marked as read-only. I pressed the ‘>’ icon to move to the next page, which should have created a second page. The app crashed.
Sorry, I can’t duplicate this one either. I will work on duplicating this one as well as the one I reported earlier today. If they are memory issues that will be difficult. Are there are crash logs that are available that would help with these?
Feb 16, 2012 @ 04:00:08
So far, I can’t repro it on iPad 1, 4.3.5. I’ll try some scenarios to replicate this issue.
At this moment, the crash log doesn’t seem to contain much useful information for Devs to investigate a crash (we’ll keep looking for a way to attach necessary information that could be useful for debugging).
Thanks Mark for bringing up this issue.

2/13 build, iPad 1, 4.3.5
I don’t think the feedback for read-only while editing works correctly.
- Create a notebook
- Make a page read only from the browse library tab
- Edit the page
- Select Make this page read-only from the Tools menu
This will correctly toggle the read-only state, but what is with the feedback within the menu? The line will highlight and stay highlighted as I toggle back and forth. It would be nice if this menu either showed the state of the read-only attribute, or perhaps read “Toggle Read-Only for this page”.
Feb 17, 2012 @ 09:53:08
Hi Mark,
I’m confused about this bug. At step 2, we set a page as “ready-only”, then, if we go to the Tools menu, it actually shows the option to mark the “notebook” as “ready-only”, this setting is to enable Read-only for entire notebook. And I think it’s valid with that option. Please correct me if I miss something here.
Thanks,
-Duy
Feb 17, 2012 @ 17:38:44
Hmmm, now I’m confused as well. In any case, I’ve not updated to the 2/16 build and I’ll edit my bug report. Seems substantively seem to be working correctly. However, when I am open to a page that is marked read-only, the first time I open the Tools menu, the text reads “Make this page read-only”. If I close the Tools menu and open it again, the next now reads “Make this page writeable.”

Inconsistent spacing in text.
I used the ‘T’ tool to write multiple lines and then noticed that the vertical line spacing is different when in pen mode vs. ‘T’ mode. I can toggle the modes back and forth and watch the spacing change. Not ideal.

Also ink marks being left when you exit out of the app using 5 finger pinch multitasking is annoying.
If you exit the app using the pinch, then close (from the switcher), when you open the app again the marks left on the page aren’t undo-able so you have to erased them individually. this is inconvenient when you have a full page of notes and then you have to be careful to erase only the markings without erasing your notes.
Feb 15, 2012 @ 23:52:38
Maybe it’s annoying, but app developers have no way to disable multi-tasking gestures from Apple devices no matter how much they try to. The only workaround I’ve found so far is to either go to the Browser pane before using the gestures or make my notebook read-only. Or else, you just gotta disable them…
Feb 16, 2012 @ 00:26:41
Multitouch inking can be disabled by developers. who writes with more than one pen simultaneously anyways??
developers can make the app where when it senses one touch it means write,
when 2 touch then scroll (as NP does)
when 3 or more then it should be ignored
multitasking gestures will always be recognized by iOS and the app has no control over that but the app has control over what the app itself recognizes as input.
take a look at any other app like Notability and Penultimate and you’ll see that the markings don’t happen on those apps when using multitouch gestures?

Feb 16, 2012 @ 06:58:06
I admit that you got a point there. But sorry, I haven’t had the opportunity to use those apps so much, so I wouldn’t know.
It’s true that maybe 1/3 of the times, panning with two fingers doesn’t move the screen but draws two lines instead…
Feb 16, 2012 @ 17:03:41
Yes, that what Notes Plus did (ignore 4+ touches) in version 2. Then we encountered a problem with the palm pad. If a user palm produce 3+ touches then he cannot write at all.
Viet
Feb 16, 2012 @ 22:37:37
Yes, that makes sense, but is it possible to enable it only when the palm pad is being used? that way you if you don’t use the palm pad all of this wouldn’t happen.
Another way to fix this would be to not let the app write simultaneous pen strokes. the same way you use it to recognize figures.
for example if your pen stroke is in a circular motion (i.e. a hand-drawn circle) then it creates a perfect circle; if two or more lines are drawn simultaneously, then it recognizes a unwanted feature and does not draw them.
However, this would create another problem. if you are using a stylus without the palm pad and your palm accidentally touches the screen it would recognize 2 touches and delete the last pen stroke you wrote (for example a letter or word).
Anyways, I guess for now focus on more important bugs and then you can try to solve this problem later.
Feb 18, 2012 @ 05:42:28
Thanks Viet,
This seems like a mystery that would be important to resolve.
Why is this problem happening?
This could be a basic problem that is impeding progress in Notes Plus.

For version 3.0.3 release I would like to see a Print feature. the ‘Open as PDF in” feature is very helpful and adding the ‘Print’ feature would be even better.
I find emailing a page/notebook to yourself and then going to the mail app to print it a little inconvenient.

This is a bit of an old topic. But the deal with having to click the lock on an image or shape to select it. I say that was genius. I use color rectangles daily to bring attention to parts of my notes and without this feature, I don’t thing it would work for me.

2/13 build, iPad 1, 4.3.5
This isn’t a new issue and I’ve reported it before, but since it’s not on the current bug list and I believe this to be fairly critical (at least for how I use NP), here it is again.
There seems to be no way to get text to align with drawn lines on the page. I’ve tried typing in the text then adjusting the line size, holding the line size constant and changed the font size, typing into text blocks and moving them around, shaking my fist at my iPad, etc. It was difficult to do this in NP2, but I was able to do it. It seems impossible in NP3.
I often annotate with ink over text I’ve created and this is very difficult to do in the current state and get my annotations to line up with the lines of text I’m editing.

- Create a text block (“ABC” tool)

In the browser panel, if I tap the URL bar, the list of all visited URLs shows. Then, I swipe to delete them. All works well if I swipe from the most recent URLs to the less recent ones (from bottom to top), however if I swipe the URLs from top to bottom, the app will crash after the 2nd or 3rd deletion (not so fast for 3.0.2) and when I reopen the app, the URLs I had already deleted will be there again as if the app didn’t save my most recent actions.

Are we supposed to be testing Dropbox in this build?
Feb 15, 2012 @ 14:42:57
I think the devs haven’t changed anything to it yet… Viet was saying that they would have to stabilize it before submitting the next update to the app store, but he didn’t add Dropbox to the Changelog as of now, so I’d say no testing required for it at the moment. He’s currently only trying to approximate a date for the update, I believe.
Feb 16, 2012 @ 03:50:52
Sounds good, thanks
Feb 14, 2012 @ 12:02:48
Viet, I totally agree you need to release 3.0.3 to fix some major bugs that are causing major issues for some people and a lot of negative reviews. Please though once you’ve done this then don’t release another update until virtually all bugs on the bug list are resolved. All that’s happening is versions are released with loads of known bugs not resolved (whether critical/major/moderate etc) and this doesn’t show well. The app store needs 1 stable version and then if it takes 1-2 months for another version that is bug free then so be it. Then we can look to the future and develop an error free version.
Just my 2 cents (that I can’t spend as I live in the UK)

Bug: writing pad retracts when changing orientation
The rest of the interface keeps up, so I’d expect that wrist guard thing to not make a run for the border every time the orientation changes.

I see this too, it is annoying and makes taking notes harder, because you have to enable the palm pad each time you change orientation? The same thing happens with the close-up box. If I am rioting and I accidentally change my orientation, I don’t want to have to re-implement the palm pad or close-up box.

Whoa.. you’re right about the close-up box being similarly afflicted. I thought that used to work.. ? Maybe not, but zoomed-in view behaves pretty well. That’s 1/3 guys..
I’ve been resorting to the close-up box recently — it’s the only thing that doesn’t seem to crash the app; I’d prefer to just write fully zoomed in, but zooming out has about a 90% chance of making me lose work.
Feb 15, 2012 @ 17:38:25
Hi Robyn,
Yes, the closeup box is like that too, and I can confirm it wasn’t so back in v2. I’m just hoping it’s a bug so it can be fixed.

Big feature for an upcoming update…Seeing how big the ipad screen is, would it be possible for you guys to incorporate a locking feature that let a user view both sides of the screen in its entirety (both screens in full mode)? As it is right now, if I want to see a webpage on the the left screen and take note on the other screen, I am not able to view the entire webpage; I have to keep panning, which gets quite annoying. With the ability to see both screen entirely while working would note cause a problem either because if somebody is taking notes on the right side of the screen, the ability to write in close-up mode becomes that much more useful because you would not have to sacrifice anything.
Feb 14, 2012 @ 11:48:22
Reyginald,
This is what Viet would ideally want to do but unfortunately a big fruit with a bite taken out of it stands in his way! Apple have a ludicrous rule regarding multiple windows on the one screen and so for the time being this is off the table. Apple even made Tapose disable this function and yet they still haven’t accepted the app. We just have to wait and hope that common sense prevails as dual windows is what we all want.
Feb 14, 2012 @ 17:04:57
That’s unfortunate
Feb 14, 2012 @ 01:55:46
Viet, a question on testing Dropbox when you turn us back on to that task.
How will beta 3.0.3 play with the released 3.0.2 if both are syncing to Dropbox? I ask because of the difficulties I had with mixing previous beta and released versions. Will they both report to Dropbox as NotesPlus and share the same internal directories?
Just downloaded and installed 2/13 so off to test that.
Feb 14, 2012 @ 04:04:35
Mark,
I would say they would as they both use your current Dropbox account to create the link as well as the Dropbox folder structure.
There is no obvious distinction between using the released and beta versions of NotesPlus the way Dropbox sees it.
That makes me want to work extra carefully as I think I might have encountered some strangeness with my reappearing deleted notebooks.
Best,
Simeon
Feb 16, 2012 @ 03:42:16
Hi Mark,
We don’t change anything to Dropbox code in latest build, and v3.0.3 beta build is still using the same folder structures with production version (v3.0.2), therefore please DON’T link with Dropbox since it could cause mess up with your existing notebooks on v3.0.2. Once Dropbox module is ready for testing, we’ll provide the steps to test this module.
Thanks,

Deleted Notebooks
I am not sure what is happening but it seems that when I try deleting notebooks and reopen the App they reappear not as notebooks but as folders with the wierd naming convention for example:

I have deleted these from the App itself and emptied the trash. i have also tried deleting them from the Dropbox area as well to keep them from syncing back into 3.03.
Any idea as to what might be going on?

NotesPlus v 3.03 Feb. 13th build
Feb 13, 2012 @ 23:54:42
OK,
Things look like they have calmed down.
I went back through and tried deleting from NotesPlus 3.03 as well as double checking the trash and the DropBox folder.
So far no phantom notebooks have been seen.
best,
Simeon

Hi Simeon,
I guess Dropbox was syncing these notebooks and until the process was done, they appeared as folders.
Feb 13, 2012 @ 21:53:53
2/9 build, iPad 1, 4.3.5
UI problem in browse library tab.
If I have the browse library tab open to show a notebook’s individual pages, when I switch to the left panel and open the browse library tab, I still get shown the notebook’s individual pages even though that presentation makes no sense. I’m not allowed to select specific pages in that mode so I have to go back up one level to get to a selectable notebook.
The UI should not allow me to see choices that I’m not allowed to select.
Feb 14, 2012 @ 02:32:30
Hi Mark,
Are you saying that when you’re editing a notebook and go to Library, you see that notebooks pages and have to go out of the notebook level to select another notebook?
If so, that is by design. While in a notebook you need to see the pages for overview, rearrange, rename pages, copy page. It’s natural that if you are done with the notebook you need to go out of the book to select another book. The opposite is counter intuitive. If the library pane only shows books, it’s a prob for users who want to do page management – they have to reopen an already open notebook to get to the pages – which is silly – you’re already in the notebook.
Hope this clarifies.

Feb 14, 2012 @ 03:10:23
Oh I see, you mean you want left pane library view to let you scroll through pages of item open on the left? – m-g
Feb 14, 2012 @ 06:23:44
No, he’s saying that, if you’re in the right pane and your library browser is open and showing the pages of a given notebook, when you close the browser, switch to the left pane, and reopen the browser, the pages are still visible, but none of them actually respond… if the notebook isn’t open the left, touching a page does nothing. If the notebook is open, touching a page still does nothing.
He says that it’s impolite for a GUI to show actions that should intuitively work yet do nothing. Two possible fixes: make touching a page do something in the left (preferable) or simply go back to the notebook view and don’t show the tantalizing impossibility (infinitely less preferable).

Hi Mark,
I agree. It’s a bug: http://notesplusapp.com/ticket/351.
Feb 13, 2012 @ 21:51:15
2/9 build, iPad 1, 4.3.5
- Created a new notebook.
- Inked on page 1
- open this notebook in left panel
- went back to edit and added a second page and inked on it.
Now I can’t get the second page to show up on the left panel at all. I’ve switched documents on both the left and right panel, exited NP, etc. NP will only open on the left panel as the original 1 page document.
Feb 14, 2012 @ 15:47:18
Hi Mark,
I couldn’t replicate this. Initially I did see an empty page 2 but then I switched documents in the right panel and reopen the notebook in the left. I could see page 2. Could you check again?
Feb 15, 2012 @ 16:33:29
Here are the steps to recreate:
- Create new notebook (test3)
- ink on page 1
- immediately switch to left panel
- open test3 (note that the page does NOT show the inking)
- switch back to right panel
- browse library to page view of test3
- switch back to left panel, close, then re-open test3
- now you can see the ink
(now we’re ready for my initial bug report)
- switch back to right page
- add a second page
- ink on it
- open another notebook. re-open test3
- switch to left panel
- no matter how many documents I open or close, looking at test3 shows only 1 page
If I go to the address bar of the browser and refresh, then I get page 2. There is some caching that it not being released by the normal means of going to the browse library tab.
Feb 16, 2012 @ 03:38:55
Hi Mark,
Are you still able to reproduce this issue consistently on build 2/13? I’m following your steps but it doesn’t seem to appear for me.
Thanks,
-Duy
Feb 13, 2012 @ 21:48:18
2/9 build, iPad 1, 4.3.5
I have a document (imported from a v2 notebook) that has a base of a blob of text created with the text tool (ABC, not T). I copy the first page which is being used as a template to the last page every time I want a new entry, and then I ink over the page with notes and annotations. When I view this notebook in the left panel the base text does not show up. I made a new notebook and this problem does not appear to happen, so it’s an issue with a V2 imported notebook.
Feb 13, 2012 @ 05:12:37
I’m not sure if anybody has reported this, but I didn’t see it in the ticket list:
the auto advance sometimes skips you to the next line before you want to.
this video shows the bug:
http://youtu.be/xi7MZw1tkuQ
as you can see on the video it only happens when the gray box is barely touching the right margin and it doesnt happen everytime but on a single 1 hour of class notes it happens to me about 5 to 8 times, so it is kind of annoying at times when you are in a hurry to write everything.
Feb 13, 2012 @ 06:14:57
+1! I’m getting this same issue, though it isn’t consistent in reproducibility… Would very much like to see this fixed…
Feb 13, 2012 @ 07:02:48
anywhere on the sheet except near the right margin the gray area that advances you appears at about 3/4 of the lenght of the box but if you place the box near the right margin the gray area appears at about 1/4 of the lenght:
http://youtu.be/WJl8EuwzkcI
Feb 13, 2012 @ 22:12:10
Yes, that’s exactly how it’s happened to me too. And the box ends up skipping to the MIDDLE of the next line, not even the beginning…
This should be added to the “close-up box bugs ticket” that’s currently still “Waiting for reoccurence.”
Feb 13, 2012 @ 22:45:24
I haven’t been able to reproduce this behavior with the 2/9 build. I’ve seen this occur quite frequently in previous versions, but not in 2/9. I note that my close-up box is of a different size than yours. I wonder it’s a problem related to that.
On a related note, though, when attempting to reproduce the problem you’re talking about, I had a re-occurrence of a bug that was fixed a while ago. I couldn’t find the bug number and I don’t remember it, but the problem is when writing in the close-up box the ink shows up in the close-up box, but upon stopping writing the ink disappears. I couldn’t get this to duplicate, but it did happen once.
Feb 14, 2012 @ 09:30:39
Are you sure this was fixed a while ago? I’ve only noticed that there have been reports of this bug recently… But because of its inconsistency and therefore the inability to reproduce it, the dev team hasn’t been able to solve the problem yet… And I think it hasn’t been added to the bug tracker either?
So far, I’ve managed to reproduce it twice in a row by writing one same word, but after that the bug disappears again.
Feb 14, 2012 @ 11:54:39
I had this problem last night testing 2/13 build. I was writing on 1 line and the box auto-advanced to the next line too soon. Not only this but it auto-advanced 1/3 of the way along the next line down. Also what’s happening with the fact you can draw 2 lines simultaneously? Surely if you’re writing no other touches should be recognised?? My hand accidentally crept into the zoom box and so a few dots/lines appeared whilst writing.
Feb 16, 2012 @ 03:37:21
Hi Mark,
I also realize sometimes the ink disappears upon stopping writing. However, i can’t repro this issue consistently.

Hi Oscar,
Thanks for the videos. I’ve just filed the bug: http://notesplusapp.com/ticket/350.
Feb 10, 2012 @ 23:45:27
ipad 2 3.0.3 2/9 build.
In 3.0.2 and 3.0.3 I can’t name a page with a value starting with a number.
Result is the page number is still untitled and the page numbers (x/x) are part of the title.
Feb 11, 2012 @ 00:03:49
IPad 2 v 5.02 NP 3.02
I can name pages starting with any digit.
Feb 11, 2012 @ 08:41:46
I can’t repro this issue too. I’m still able to create name of page starting with a number just fine.
Feb 11, 2012 @ 12:36:04
iPad 2, 5.0.1, 2/9 build. I cannot reproduce this either. I can name/rename a page with numeric and numeric/alpha.
Feb 12, 2012 @ 07:39:11
Are you all renaming from the page list or right on the page itself, which is where I am naming the page. I have no trouble reproducing this every time.
Feb 12, 2012 @ 12:19:59
I am renaming pages from the page list in the directory… I can’t see another way to name/rename pages within a notebook. I am able to use numbers anywhere in the page name.
When the page is open and the directory is closed, I can see the Notebook name at the top od the page. I am also able to rename the Notebook from this position with a number as the first character.
If there’s a different way you’re doing this, would you lay out the steps and I’ll be happy to see if I can replicate it.
Feb 12, 2012 @ 22:29:56
I’m not using the beta (3.0.2) and can reproduce it every time, as Keith describes. It happens when I try to rename on a page. You do this by sliding the very faint arrow that is located to the right of the notebook name over to the left, which exposes the full page name and makes it editable. Trying to start the new name with a number doesn’t work.
Renaming in the directory works just fine.
Feb 13, 2012 @ 10:43:27
Yes I’m on 3.02 not beta and can repro this exactly by using the LH arrow at the top and trying a number as the first character. Yet doing it in the library view works fine every time.
Feb 13, 2012 @ 13:05:28
+1… Thanks for outlining the steps. I see where the page name should be editable from the page view, and I am also reproducing this bug. From the directory I renamed pages beginning with both alpha and numeric, but within the page can only rename page itself beginning with alpha.
Feb 12, 2012 @ 22:26:26
Keith,
The actual page names do not show up where the notebook name is displayed.
I had a notebook named “Song Ideas”. I then tapped on the title and changed the name to “1 Song Ideas” then collapsed the pop up keyboard.
The result here was the name of the notebook was changed not the page. I do not think NotesPlus displays the page name, only the notebook name.
The notebook browser is the only place i can see to rename individual notebook pages. Something to consider in the future is a way to toggle between the Notebook name and the individual page name displayed.
Hope that helps,
Simeon
Feb 13, 2012 @ 09:18:32
??
Slide the left arrow that isn’t the navigation arrow. It will allow you to rename the page in place of renaming the notebook…
Feb 13, 2012 @ 14:06:51
Cool,
Just found it.

Feb 13, 2012 @ 14:17:48
**POSSIBLE SOLUTION**
Keith,
I think I found the problem.
If I type the number first then the name and hit “Done” on the pop up keyboard it will not change the page name.
BUT
If I type the new page name with the leading number ” 1 Page” for instance and then I just collapse the on screen keyboard then it seems to work.
I just tried renaming the 1 Page test with 23 Page and hit done.
The result was a page named “1 Page (1/1)(1/1)”.. Bizarre ;<)
So the workaround is when renaming pages do not hit "Done" just collapse the onscreen keyboard.
Hope that helps,
Simeon
Feb 14, 2012 @ 04:23:32
Simeon,
You are also seeing something that happened when I tried to name the page starting with a number using the page entry and pressing done – I would get (#/#) and then if I do it a again the page name becomes (#/#) (#/#).
Feb 14, 2012 @ 13:52:46
Hi Simeon, and all,
Bug confirmed: http://notesplusapp.com/ticket/349. Thanks for all your efforts.
Feb 10, 2012 @ 21:20:37
Through a vicious combination of my own naive stupidity and NP’s slow bugginess, I’m left importing a large PDF. Don’t ask why I tried to import it today in the first place, knowing that the import issues haven’t been resolved yet. I just wanted my textbook open in a way that was more convenient to take notes than to have to switch back and forth between iBooks and NP. What’s the point? Well, it’s quite simple: there doesn’t appear to be a way to cancel an import… if importing is made more sane in the future, I guess this won’t be needed, but, at this precise moment, it would have been nice

Can’t seem to make new comments.. only reply to existing threads..
By the way, BUG: autocorrect is enabled in the URL bar

Hi Josh,
This feedback makes sense. Actually we have ticket #304 mentioned about this behavior. Let’s wait and see for further info from our Dev Team.

I noticed I’ve reported a few bugs that had already been mentioned. Oops!
Feb 11, 2012 @ 21:09:53
Josh,
Just ran into this when installing the latest beta 1-9-12.
I had the King James Version (over 700 pages) syncing up to Dropbox ;<)
Thought I would go make some soup while it was finishing.
Opens the door for more potential Dropbox profiles such as selective syncing or full notebook folder syncing where everything gets mirrored.
Best,
Simeon

2/9 build, iPad 1, 4.3.5
Having played a bit with this build and duplicating a lot of the inking tests that I’ve done and reported to Viet, I’m very pleased with the progress that has been made. This build is significantly better than the released 3.0.2 inking performance and I look forward to a release with these improvements.
There are still issues, and they are getting a little more difficult to duplicate. I agree with the previous comments that memory is an issue, although that is hard to track down. Also, the zoom factor does appear to be an issue. I know when I made the close-up box bigger (zoomed in) that my writing performance seemed to degrade. This is qualitative so far, I haven’t played around with this much. 2/9 build still suffers from problems when NP needs to catch up with its internal processing. At times when it auto-advances the close-up inking will be dropped. Doesn’t always happen. Very brief pen lifts will sometimes be missed and a solid line will be drawn between the lifts. I see this when dotting an i and moving on to the next letter, I’ll get a solid line that joins the dot and the beginning of the next letter.
This is a significant improvement.
Feb 10, 2012 @ 19:44:47
I also agree that the newest build has gone one big step forward.
Having an iPad 2, zooming in the close-up box doesn’t really degrade the handwriting, so it’s probably more of an issue on an iPad 1.
From what I previously read, I think that to test out the app’s inking performance, the best solution is would be to use your finger to write. I agree that it’s not very practical, but only then would you be able to judge accurately the app’s performance. I mean, originally, the iPad’s technology was designed to allow users to do everything with just their fingers. Besides, our styluses might be acting up at certain times rather than others. So it’s much more convincing to just try writing with your hand; at least for testing purposes, I would say…
Feb 11, 2012 @ 08:59:40
Good to see the improvement for inking performance. However, in my opinion, we still have a lot of works on iPad 1. It’s still noticeable slugishness and not as smooth as we expected.
